Meh. Would have much rather waited for Garrison or Salvador to make their decisions.

Just realized Brunnstrom is a UFA. We still have a hole in the top 6, right?

But with all those rumours regarding veteran players it seems they want

- short term bridge contracts, until prospects are ready to take over
- players with (leadership) experience, help with prospects' development
- disappointed in current players' performances, especially in leadership after devastating season ending (Ribeiro gone. Morrow next? )

Whitney - Benn - Doan
Loui - Eakin - Ryder
Ott/Morrow - ? - Vincour
Nystrom - Fiddler - Garbutt

So many prospects waiting to make their debut. Exciting.
Such a team doesn't belong to the bottom five which certainly wouldn't be part of Gaglardi's and GMJoe's winning philosophy.

Obviously, if there's a younger player available like Parise (Garrison? Hudler?), they wouldn't shy away from giving him a long term deal.

Also, after the Rome signing there is one dman the odd man out. Curious what an Ott/Morrow + Fistric package would get in return...

From GM Joe:

Quote:
Aaron is a physical defensive defenseman who adds size and grit to our blue line,” said Nieuwendyk. “He competes at a very high level and helps make our team harder to play against. We’re very pleased to add Aaron to our team for the next three years.”

Wow New Jersey is taking a major hit.

Brodeur, Hedberg, Parise, Sykora, and Salvador are all UFAs, and 4 of them had a huge role in them getting to the Finals. I'll be stunned if Brodeur leaves, but gonna be interesting to see what they do.

I dont really think signing Rome, a sure fire 3rd pairing guy, is going to prevent us from making an offer for a 1st pairing guy like Garrison

You guys have probably heard it already, but Aaron Rome is a pretty awesome defensemen. He will make the odd mistake, but does anything you could ever ask from a 3rd pairing defensemen. Fights, hits, makes the simple play 9 times out of 10, and cheap. That's a great deal for him.

It's going to create a bloody logjam and force us to move players.

Thank goodness because half our D never makes the smart simple play .... Looking at you Robidas.

Who says we aren't? The Stars obviously aren't thrilled with Pardy. They have never been crazy about Fistric. Robidas has loosely indicated that he would like to win a cup at some point. All three of those guys are liable to be dealt.

So do we grab Jokinen or wait for Doan. Sorry this was just on my mind. And I don't like the Rome deal at all.

After July 9th, I'll come up with a full roster of why I expect. If Doan wasn't such a good possibility, it wouldn't matter, but I don't think we're done at all. A trade (maybe two) and at least one more FA, if not more.

Damn, Warren Peters just signed with Pittsburgh. We could've had a Brunnstrom - Peters - Connor line. Man, that would've been scary for other teams.

I don't know, but this is 2 offseasons in a row Joe has overpaid long term for a #6/#7 D-man. This is after saying Dillon is going to make the big team most likely.

Also why sign a #6 D-man before the #2-3s are signed? Now if we do get Garrison by chance, we have to move 2-3 D-men just to fit in a prospect like Dillon.

If they're planning on trading Pardy/Robidas the whole time, this makes sense. Otherwise, I'm baffled.

Looking at these projected lineups people are throwing out there and seeing Eakin penciled in as #2 center seems like it could be what sends this thing to the depths of despair for one season. Not trying to debby downer anything but based on what Caps fans have said about Eakin (most seem to feel that he's not NHL ready) makes me think that if we don't sign or trade for a stop gap #2-3 tweener center that we could be in for a rough one next year.

I'm even more convinced now that somebody like Stajan will be a Star before long.

Well then by all means lets panic before we have a chance to see if that's the plan.

This may be the first time I've ever seen some one being serious about #6/7 defender preventing a team from landing a Top 4 defender.

I'm not panicking at all. Just curious.

I don't think its crazy to think they might be OK with the 8 D-men they have under contract now, considering they have to move one or keep Dillon in the AHL already. Let alone add another. But there's also a very good chance Garrison/Sutter/Salvador/whoever has told them they're not interested, so they went with Rome after they couldn't get Salo. I'm sure Joe has a reason.

Believe me, I'm the last one to panic about our roster before the offseason is over.

Doesn't matter to me when you sign the guys and honestly I don't think it matters all that much to have to trade a couple defensemen.
