When you're taking stupid penalty after stupid penalty, particularly in the offensive zone, you're going to get **** from the fans. He has sucked, and I'm having a difficult time thinking of a single thing Smyth has done that can be positive this year. He has been decent on the PK, but half the time it seems he's putting us on the PK.

Honestly, he should be making 1 million on a 1 year deal.

That's because Hemsky is playing healthy and to the level we know he can. Smyth is healthy, but playing like crap - too slow, too many stupid penalties due to the slowness, and basically handicapping the team.

There's no comparison at all when it comes to the play of these two. One has been a great contributing vet, and the other a liability every game he plays.

Like I said in this thread back in July of last year, I don't mind the dollar, don't like the term though.

Should've got a 1 year deal... I can't imagine he's going to be useful (even as a 4th liner) next year.

Unfortunately, I don't even think he's useful as a 4th liner this year.

I'm still not sure how Smyth got 2 years after the horrible stretch he had last season.

He didn't have any leverage in the negotiations either.

Dammit Tambo.

After Smyth's first stupid penalty today, Krueger looked pretty ticked off...and then Smytty decides to take two more in the game. Bet that went over well with the coach.

If he's playing badly because he's too tired, or he just needs a wake-up call the medicine's the same either way: a seat in the press box.

I still don't understand why Smyth isn't being used on the 2nd PP unit. I guess our lack of centers keeps him on the bench. Smyth is still an elite front of net presence. If we don't use him in this situation, why the hell do we have him?

We won't start winning until we replace the old vets with capable depth. Expecting the top 2 lines to shoulder all of the scoring load is not a good idea, especially given how lacklustre our defense has been.

(I don't mean Hemsky. He has been a solid contributor)

As a coach maybe. The guy is soft, slow and looks lazy to me. Chops the puck when he shoots blindly, clutches and hooks to make up for his lack of foot speed or inability to move them faster than a sloth. Quite tragic to watch such a storied veteran go to complete shambles.

SLOWWWWWWWWW. I'm sure he is trying his hardest, but he is the slowest forward in the league. He is to slow to be elite at anything anymore. If it this dejecting watching him, imagine playing with him. He was my favorite Oiler and nothing will change that, who wouldn't want millions more cash money. Katz should buy him a private island and let this former beauty retire in style, right now he's being thrown to the vultures.

He's been brutal no doubt about it. Looks like a below average 4th liner FFS. I think age and injuries have simply caught up with Smitty. Accumulated wear and tear, he wasn't playing anywhere during the lockout and now we have a condensed schedule, shortened season... poor bugger, I miss having the good ol' Smitty.

If Krueger doesn't bench Smyth next game he's more of an idiot than Smyth... plain and simple.

Smyth and Whitney are both looking like Groundhog day re-runs... same thing over and over and nothing changes. It's like the game has passed them both by. Put them out to pasture with Quinn wherever he went.

Give them official titles within the org... Smyth can be head of puck acquisition and Whitney can be chairman of the stick distribution committee... he'll also have more time to devote to his true calling.. Tweeting.

Throw this guy to the curb. He has lots of businesses in Edmonton. Will not make the team look bad.

It really should've been a one year deal, hopefully he retires before he's waived next season. And if we don't waive him assuming that this is the best that he brings then we really are being run by a gaggle of idiots.

And you forgot passes blindly as well I am not a Smyth hater but he is washed up would have a hard time competing in a old timers game tbh.

He's been bad, but I agree that he should have been on the no.2 pp unit from the start. There is no other reason to have him on the team. Wasn't he going to be a poor man's Dave Andreychuk?

Gagner, Hemsky, Smyth, Yak, Petry.

If the guy can get rid of the stupid penalties he's a far better option than callups from the minors. The problem is he's so slow that the stupid penalties are going to continue to happen. Really scary to think where we will be next year with him. I assume trading him to Long Island is probably an option.

He's better than call-ups because of his experience, but given the number of dumb penalties and lazy TOs, I'm not sure that's true anymore.

To be a cagey veteran, you need to actually play cagey.
