Yeah, I only read the first page when I replied and it seemed like there were a lot of unhappy Oiler fans. Also, I read the price wrong and thought it was $2.5M.

As for Paajarvi, there are 8 spots on a tem for wingers and he can play both sides. Nothing says he has to have top 6 minutes, and if all the RWs stay at RW, he could end up on the 2nd line anyway. It's up tp him to paly himself into the lineup/top 6.

Competition is good, people.

I wouldn't call 46 points washed up... the guy played a full NHL season at 36 years old. But you probably consider Ray Whitney washed up to right?

Smyth was incorrectly cast as a 2nd line LW by Renney. IMO he should've been 3rd line all season and if a 3rd liner gets you 30 pts that's not bad for $2.25M. Smyth is getting the right type of money for the type of player and impact in the locker room that he has. He doesn't belong on the 2nd line but he has other intangibles including leadership and heart that rub off on a young team.

We'll see what his dimished role will be like in those 2 yrs, and it will be dimished trust me, under Kreuger. His Offense, will be lucky to hit 40 pts, he'll have to have an extrodinary job at the PK, to salvage something out of this contract. Wouldn't someone like Hartikanen fit this role a lot better

He will do anything and play any role for his team.

Ultimate team player.

And as for the supposed taking spots from young players. Sorry those young players should earn their role, secondly young teams need veteran leadership.

Good signing.

And Anyone that thinks 2.25 million a year is ridiculous in a 70.2 million cap environment is truly out to lunch.

Not even. 3rd line role will mean holding back the development, future of the franchise, like MPS and Hartikanen

Because fielding a team full of 2nd year rookies entirely *won't* hold back the franchise?

Exactly.

Accounts for 3.2% of the cap. It's a bargain, and he probably left several million on the table, had he gone to the open market. The Oilers are fortunate to have him, afaic. Haters gonna hate, ****em' all.

Paajarvi needs more time in the AHL probably 2 more years IMO, and Hartikanen needs 1 more year.

But what worries me is Hartikanen already stated if he doesn't get 1 way deal when his contact is up he'll go to the KHL.

Hartikainen already deserves a spot on the 3rd line, as far as I'm concerned.

Heres the thing, they wont get fair opportunity to show they can take the job away. The Smyth signing is just a terrible signing. And I like smytty but he is a shadow of his former self and will take much needed opportunity away from PRV. I am not worried about Hartikainen as I don't see a NHL player there like everyone else does. But this is a bad signing for PRV.

Of course it's a bad signing for PRV...Great for the Oilers though..

They would have had to probably give a position to a rookie not ready for the position and stagnate his development. He and Harti needs to be in the AHL and when they play too good down there to keep them any longer, fine, bring them up and make room. That hasn't happened...not by a long shot.

Everyone likes Harti running around hitting people because we don't have many players that do that. That in no way means he deserves a spot on an NHL team.

This is an excellent deal for the Oil and for Smyth..Getting close to 40 points from a 3rd line player for 2.25 while creating energy, killing penalties, mentoring the kids, etc...

When the 2 years are up, or before, you hope some of the rookies are ready to push Smyth out and that bodes well for the organization.

People not liking this deal just hate for the sake of hate and aren't really seeing the big picture or keeping an open mind on the development of the Oilers into Stanley Cup contenders.

Good value contract.

Now it's up to Smytty to make it a great value signing.

Im in the boat that I would have had MPS in the AHL all year anyways barring a major breakout and Harti seems to always be terrible in training camp after ending the season strong so dont have faith in him. Good signing, didnt overpay and didnt commit for too many years

Salary is lower than I expected but term is longer than I expected (1 year preferable). Makes the deal a good compromise and a thumbs up to both Smyth and management for coming to logical terms.

Great signing, good length, great numbers.

Couldnt be happier. Let our 2nd tier B prospects like harti and mps earn that spot if they want it. Play so well that its a no brainer for Kruger.

He has to bring it every game and every shift. He was awful (and/or invisible) last season at the start of the season in the AHL. He played so bad he did not even deserve top 6 minutes in the AHL. He ended being a healthy scratch a few times. When he brings it, high energy every shift and consistently stays physical he can be very effective. It is up to him really.
