Carkner turns down 1 year deal from Sens

It was floating around twitter that Matt Carkner apparently turned down a 1 year deal from Ottawa and that he will be testing free agency.

What do you think of this?

I did enjoy having him but I think Ottawa can move on from him and find something better for defense.

Tag it as a rumor pls. Unless there is a credible media source that ran the story.

He's a 7th defenceman with injury issues. If this is true, I'm guessing he's trying to get a one-way contract rather than more money.

We shouldn't offer him more years. I'd be happy to have him back as the 7th guy for another year, but we shouldn't be committing a roster spot beyond this year. I suspect that he'll try the open market to see if he can get 2+ years elsewhere, and if he can't he'll take the 1 year deal we offered him.

This makes me sad, big fan of Carks...

But, can I blame him for leaving? I imagine he's got an impression that he won't be getting much time which is probably the case...

All the best to him, should he leave.

No question someone gives him a longer deal with more money. GMs almost always overspend on free agency. This is his chance to make some serious coin; I can't begrudge him that.

We'll find someone else in FA or from within (crossed fingers)

I wish him the best of luck.

Carkner fought a total of 3 times last season over the span of 3 games. We won one of them, against the Lightning.

He only played 29 games last year, so its not really going to make much of a difference.

I say good for him if he can get more money/term elsewhere. I don't think he's worth much more than he made last year and wouldn't want to commit longer to him, so if he can get it elsewhere good for him.

I have to wonder why another team would value him more than us.

I want him back and I'm fine if he does the exact same thing he's always done. If that costs more for the next two years b/c of the cap going up, then so be it. He is a perfect guy to have around for 6/7 duty, he makes us an inch taller and them an inch shorter, and he's a good guy who would be good to have around in some capacity with the organization.

Shame to part ways with a guy who wants to be here, deserves a 'going rate' deal, and fills a need.

This is likely the chance for the biggest contract of his career. With a one year contract, he could be one and done in the NHL, so in a so-so free agency year his agent may think they can get more.

Really fighting is a minor part of the game and diminishing. You need a roster spot for a GOOD d man who can also fight when required. NO room for a one dimensional player whether he is liked or not. I'm sure Carkner wanted to play more and he may get that on another team. I just can't see the offers being too high.

I actually think Carkner is OK. I am not uncomfortable with him back there as long as he keeps it simple. He can be overmatched against speed, but there are plenty of bottom pairing guys who can be. Carkner is not just a goon - if he was you'd figure he'd be a better fighter.

No idea why we couldn't offer him a 2 year, 2 million dollar contract. The guy is a warrior, a positive player to have in your dressing room, can fight, a fan fav. Not understanding the Sens management's reasoning here.

I bet negotiations are still open and he'll sign before Sunday. He's still a good fit, even with all our prospects, we have room for him.

That said, if he gets a great offer elsewhere and takes it, I'll be happy for him. He has a great story, displaying hard work and perseverence.

He's not a point producer.
He was injured most of last year.
He's kinda one dimensional.

You want to pay him the same as Neil? Who's not injury prone, can fight, can skate and can produce points.

You reasoning is not great chum.

May as well give Kuba a raise and term based on your reasoning.

Don't get me wrong, I love Carks at 1 year and 10% raise. If he shows durability then he will get another contract after this one.

You can't blame both sides.

Right now, BM's priority is bigger fish on July 1.

Cark's is not going anywhere until mid July.

The Sens should reward him.

If we're not in the running for a big FA splash, the modest boost in his salary is not going to kill the budget. No point in saving money and then not spending it anywhere.

A guy like Carkner who had to fight, claw and scratch his way onto an NHL roster. He deserves the right to test free agency and make some coin. I will not begrudge him if he signs with another team. He gave us his best.

I don't think it's fair to compare Neil's money to Carkner's imagined salary of 2 million. When deals are signed under different caps, they reflect a different salary reality rather than compare a player's relative worth. The relative worth is comparable to overpaying O'Brien more than how the Sens value Neil = Carkner, IMO.
