The difference between Niemi and Broduer on puck movement is so massive, that I think it could dramatically improve our speed of play. Not to mention, having Marty to provide Stalock, who is also a tremendous Puck-mover, some words of wisdom would be excellent.

This.

He's an excellent puck mover, think of how beneficial having a goalie who can outlet the puck right to a winger streaking up the ice would be.

1-2 years running tandem with Stalock, I wouldn't mind seeing that.

Any one that thinks a goalie who is amazing at puck movement is the best thing since sliced bread just needs to look at the past olympics of just how bad that type of goalie is to certain players/teams. Brodeur sucks at playing the puck when his team mates dont know exactly what he will do with it. Heck even with his team mates knowing him he is still useless with the puck now.

as much as i don't like the niemi signing, i just don't see broduer being an upgrade especially at the contract he is probably looking for.

i don't see who we could get for niemi that would have the impact on offense we need.

That would not make any sense.

As many of us predicted, the Devils have stepped up and are offering Martin Brodeur a 2 year contract.

I really hope he takes it. It just wouldn't be right to see him in another sweater.

First off, he's going to retire in NJ. Second off, sure DW will call on a RFA tender with 2 cup rings, he calls on *everything* and is a terrible tire kicker. This does not mean he's really interested.

He clearly was not great the first half of last year for whatever reason. He's not an upgrade over Nemo and is pretty risky, when tenders age, their game goes to **** real fast, see tampa!

Brodeur is better than Niemi the same way Joe Sakic is better than Joe Pavelski. They were better 50 years ago. Father time is undefeated and I won't take Brodeur right now even though I'm not a fan of Niemi. Besides, the only reason Brodeur won't retire is to win a Cup. There are about 20 teams who have a better chance of winning the Cup than the Sharks.

He was an excellent puck mover back in the day, not so much now. For every 1 breakout pass, he has 2 awful giveaways. He plays the puck too frequently that it often leads to turnovers and confuses the D. If it confuses the NJ D who are used to him, just think how bad it'll be for the Sharks D.
Not to mention he is horrible on breakaways. His desperation dives are so predictable. Again, for every highlight save, he lets in 2 easy goals.

I have more confidence in Niemi than Brodeur.

I posted this in the Devils forum:

I am by no means a Devils fan but I have no beef with the Devils and I like Brodeur. Personally, I would like to see him retire as a Devil rather than go somewhere else. He's already won the Cup three times. I actually like it when players stay with one franchise their whole career especially if they've had success with that team, or even players like Sundin (I'm a Leaf fan too) who played with one team for a while and then went to another team that had a few good playoff runs, he put up good numbers and the fans loved him. Then he went to the Canucks for a season and quite a few Leaf fans saw it as a slap in the face and hated him. Marty has broken too many records and been too successful for that to happen to him and for it to seem right. I'm not even a Devils fan and it just wouldn't sit well with me to see him go back to New Jersey in a different jersey and get some boos.

I do not want our team to be responsible for ruining that.

The whole idea of playing with one team is silly. Players move, no big deal. I would love it if he came to the sharks and mentored Griess or stalock. Trade Niemi and that contract for a winger. Done and done. This isn't a scrub has been. We're talking about one of the 2 greatest goalie in the history of the sport who just took his team to the final in the previous season. And it wasn't like Niemi who had a team so stacked it seemed like they used EA sports NHL 10 to build it (not sure if that's the right year).

Give him 2 years and tell him the first year he's the starter and the second year he's the backup or at least tell him he will have to outplay stalock to remain the starter.

Would anybody be interested in Brodeur if the sole purpose of it WAS to expose our defense.

@RenLavoieRDS

Martin Brodeur is staying with the Devils. 2 years / 9 millions. Great news for the Devils fans and that franchise.
So that's that.
