Erik Gustafsson plays for Philly. This thread is about Jonas Gustavsson.

As far as Gustavsson goes, from what I have seen he is a good goalie who can make some solid saves but he lets in a stinker quite frequently. He might make a decent backup but I don't see him wrestling the starting job from Howard.

Wouldn't it be typical if he now posts a shutout in the Winter Classic against the Leafs.

It will be interesting to see how Gus manages without Allaire as his coach (not that he's a bad coach but it they've proven to be a bit of a mismatch style-wise) and a better defensive system in front of him.

It makes perfect sense. Alaire coached him to not play the style that he had success with in theSEL.

He will probably shine in Detroit. Just a hunch.

Good signing. Pretty decent backup, alright money. He'll have the opportunity to do well there. Kind of surprised the Jets didn't get him re-signed.

He's so unimportant I'm not going to even bother learning his name.

Liked Clemenson a bit better, but can't be mad with those terms. I can see him coming in and play 30 a season while winning 20ish.

Its not Allaire.

However; if Gus plays as well, as he should, (and he will), Ron Wilson will NEVER get
a job in the NHL again.

Will probably end up a Fabian Brunnstrom type move low risk no reward but I hope it works out and he achieves the career people thought he would have.

Didn't think he'd get quite as much cash though...

Hey, he could've been talking about Johan Gustafsson, the Minnesota goalie prospect who just posted a .930 SV% in Sweden.

Strange thing is, I heard that Holland said that Gustavsson wasn't an NHL goaltender.

Would you rather play for Winnipeg (Atlanta Thrashers) or Detroit?

Hopefully being in a room full of Swedes, having a goalie coach that seems to promote the reflex/athletic based styles moreso than Allaire, and having less pressure with a redcued roll Im hoping/expecting (sorta) Gust to post respectable numbers for the next few years and re-enter UFA status in 2 years as a potential #1 goalie who earned some credibility in the league.

Very happy for Gustavsson, this should be a great situation for him. There was too much pressure in Toronto, forcing him into a starting role on a terrible team in a toxic/losing environment really did not do him any favours. That, and we preach a very "puck blocking" style for our goalies, when Gustavsson's strength lies in his athleticism, he needs to play more of a scrambling/instinctive style to be effective.

I think Detroit will get the best out of him, as a backup he'll have a lot less pressure, there won't be the "OMG WE SUCK BLAME EVERYONE!" attitude, I think they'll let him play to his strengths (as opposed to forcing a style on him), and he'll have a MUCH better team in front of him. Gus wasn't going to work out in Toronto, but I think he'll be a good backup in Detroit, might even work his way into a tandem situation eventually.
