Didn't we try to trade Boogie for this guy?

But yeah. Oilers better watch out!

Pretty sure this guy was brought in to make sure nobody touches granlund.

Kassian can only play when he has a sparring partner... this guy should strike fear in the lightweight fighters.

From Wikipedia

"Zenon Konopka (born January 2, 1981) is a Canadian professional goon."

i like this signing, but i think people are going to start complaining about his penalties before too much time has passed.

FIFY. Meh as long as players aren't running our players and it's not costing us a game...

Great signing, we could use the grit, he won't score much, once in a blue moon, but good PK guy, will win faceoffs and gives us depth and a true 4th line.

Yep. We tried to get him plus a 3rd and 4th rounder from Tampa Bay for Boogie. The Tampa GM at the time didn't realize he didn't have one of the picks and before we corrected the deal, the deadline was over.

i would disagree with this out of the gate.

if konopka takes a penalty, there was a damned good reason for him to take the penalty. he doesn't take very many dumb penalties. i've wanted him signed ever since the boogaard trade failed.

i like the signing, but there isn't a whole lot of difference between Konopka and Staubitz other than overall aggression and faceoff ability. The aggression makes Konopka a better forechecker but he's also going to take stupid penalties more often than staubitz. the benefits outweigh the negatives though.

I think you're overestimating the ability for fans to tell the difference between a good and a bad penalty.

The biggest difference is Konopka's ability to play center.

well yeah...faceoff ability. he moves around with more purpose on the ice--i don't think he's necessarily any smarter than Staubitz but he's a better hockey player overall--no doubt about that. so with staubitz we see stupid penalties and they are egregious and unforgivable because we get nothing back from him. With Konopka we see a player who can fullfill more than one function on the ice, so penalties are a little easier to swallow.
lets not blow this out of proportion--Konopka is healthy scratch material on a deep team never mind his faceoff abilities.

I love that Konopka was willing to fight Kassian when asked (and held his own), yet isn't so big that the chicken-s**t agitators can use that as an excuse to not fight him.

A Konopka note: Since 2009-10, Konopka leads the NHL in PIM (765) and ranks fourth in faceoff % (59.0)

Staubitz was a joke as an enforcer here. I've never seen a guy who was supposed to be a tough, stand-up-for-his-teammates guy who picked his spots to be that guy more than Staubitz did. Konopka will dance with anybody, anytime.

Check the video, he wasnt asked he pretty much made Kassian fight him. IMO thats exactly what this team needed last year, a guy who isnt afraid to start trouble instead of always responding to it. I even hope he brings a little bit of cheap/dirty with him.

Quote from Russo's article:

"Koivu is a superstar that maybe doesn’t get enough respect around the league and he should," Konopka said. "Heatley is a world-class player and we have to make sure those guys are taken care of and they feel very comfortable and nice. If they want to sit down at center ice and read the paper, they should be able to do that without anyone touching them."

LOL...

You might be right. From that angle, I can see Matt is looking at him as he comes up, and I assumed Matt said something to him to get the ball rolling, but there's no question that Konopka's one glove comes off very fast while Matt isn't reacting yet.
