I looked into his history and he has never played with really skilled linemates. He wasn't playing with Mikko Koivu when he scored 25 in 09-10. In montreal he scored a decent amount on the third/fourth lines.

My feeling is that he is a good scorer that never really got the teammates he deserves. He tends to do better than you expect considering the lines he's on.

Well, he played with Havlat...

Both had great chemistry together.

Sure but his stats were a lot better than Havlat's lol. Havlat was pretty damn bad in 09-10.

The way I see it is that he is a reclamation project. If he plays like he usually does, his spot will be taken by one of the younger guys. If he can hold onto his spot, well then good for him, and it should be enough to get another contract.

Why?

Gui has proved he's a top 6 player. 2nd line would be the best fit for him.

Scoring 40 pts once doesn't make you a top 6 player

They said because of his injuries and pretty much missing the last 2 seasons there shouldnt be any expectation. They also said if he stays healthy and comes to camp in shape he should be a good fit on the 2nd line.

Hes also never scored 40 pts so I dont know how he is a proven top 6 fwd. He definately has the skills to be.

Well then, why did the Sens trade Foligno?

It's been reported they did it to make space for Gui so...

It's the Murray method for trading - one step forward and two steps back.

Trading Foligno doesn't make La-tenderness a top 6 player. Still, it would be great if he could avoid the fondu pot this offseason.

Imagine if this chubby fellow goes out and scores 40 or something? I can't stop laughing thinking about it.

They acquired Latendresse because he was a supremely cheap option who was willing to come here because he wanted to be close to his child in Montreal. They are hoping against hope that he can do something that he's never been able to do, which is stay healthy and consistent and break 40 points.

In no way should "proven" be used to describe Latendresse. It's a flyer on a cheap, injury riddled player so that they can save some money.

It would nice for him to show up for camp "only" 10-15 pounds overweight. He has never bought into the conditioning required to make use of his talent.

Le nouvel attaquant des #Sens, @thetender48, portera le numéro 73 à Ottawa. Pour rendre hommage à Jarkko Ruutu?

Hudler is still out there, along with Doan, Arnott as UFAs. Hudler could make a difference in the Top 9 no question and he knows MacLean

I just don't see this as a risk. One year deal around 1 million.

If he can't cut the top 6, Silfverberg, Stone, Zibanejad will gladly take the spot...

84 - 11 = 73. It's a sign.

Just like Butler and Filatov could easily fill in on the Top 6 last year right?

I like these prospects but expecting them to immediately become top end producers is folly. The Sens desperately needed to fill one of their 2 Top 6 openings with an established scorer and let the rookies battle it out for the remaining spot.

Latendresse is a complete crap shoot. While he's not a risk money wise, he's certainly a risk in terms of being able to provide production, become motivated where he hasn't in the past and to stay off the IR.

Why fans are so excited about "value" deals when this team is having an issue even getting to the cap floor is a little bizarre.

We've already got Regin as our "let's hope he can actually do something other than get hurt" guy. There was no good reason to put another player in this category into the mix other than Murray got to save Eugene some money.

Foligno was set to make $2.5-$3 million as an RFA and Murray replaced him with a guy who is so brittle and without value that he would be willing to sign for almost nothing.

So while I'm sure Melnyk is pumped about the cost savings, as a fan, it's not really something I feel I should get excited about.

I agree, but I tried to tell that to the Foligno-Iz-2nd-Line-4-Lyfe crowd, and got slammed for it.

Latty has the potential to be a 2nd line guy. He's had a good year when he scored 25, but then got interrupted by a lot of injuries. I say he can get there again, but with his noggin, it's no guarantee.

Still, I'd take "Latendresse-Methot" over "Foligno-Nobody". I like the signing. LOTS of upside here, very limited downside.
