July 1st - free agent frenzy!

... too bad there isn't many UFAs.

Real question: Who spends $9 mil/year on someone?

For the Canucks:

What I hope for:

Doan and/or Whitney
+
Garrison/Salo

What is likely:

Joey Crabb and/or Mathieu Darche
+
Staios/Campoli

GO GO GMMG GO GO.

Why hasn't MG signed anyone yet? It's past 12. Why is he not trying yet? Is he a failure of a GM because he tried but didn't succeed? Why hasn't he signed Parise yet? I don't get it.

MG is not doing his job right now. Why? Any explanations?

I'd be happy with Garrison and a 3rd line centre. We'll figure out the rest later.

I'm really not expecting much from Gillis during the next week or so, maybe one or two underrated depth players to compete for the bottom six or #7 D-man role.

I'd be happy with:

1st line RW (Semin/Doan)
Top 6 forward (PA/Whitney)
Top 4 dman (Garrison/Carle?)
Third line centre (Winnik/McClement)
Bottom 6 forward (Purst/Tootoo)
Backup goalie (Clemmensen/Gustavsson)

So...... yeah

I'm just going to approach today assuming we'll sign Marco Sturm to a two-year deal. That's setting the bar low so that if nothing happens, I won't be disappointed.

That is definitely a low bar.

Ouch.

I'm going Peter Mueller or Latendresse for MayRay money...if two is breaking the rules, I'll go with Mueller.

My dream: Sign Suter + Garisson, trade Edler for Pavelski + 1st.

I'm going in with the assumption that the Canucks will be relocated to Albuquerque. So even if we sign Marco Sturm, I'll be happy.

We need to do something about the defence but, really, unless it's Garrison at a not-awful price i'd rather address it via trade. Not many decent options.

I'll be happy with not doing anything stupid and signing someone to ridiculous long terms contracts that would handcuff us in a year or so. Rather than any specific player.

Maybe a temporary #3-4C while Kesler recovers. But again, cost.

Hoping for Mr. Garrison on D. Maybe MG will get lucky and we'll snag Mr. Hat for 3rd line C.

I think MG will sign a crappy 3rd liner who he thinks he can move up and play the 2nd line also.

And an ahl player because he likes to focus on the ahl when our team is suffering lol

and another fringe 4th liner who prob wont even see many games with all the bottom 6 guys we already have

What we need is another top end player, somebody who can still pot goals, even when the going gets tough. Similar to Doan but I haven't watched much of him recently so im not sure if hes still got what it takes, though i'd prob be happy with Semin, be nice to have another pure goal scorer instead of a bunch of gritty guys who need to push the puck over the line instead of beign able to score off of a shot

Obviously parise would be killer but i think thats too good to be true. More likely to get the SUPER overrated on HFBoards Garrison. lol

people on hfboards care far too much about where a player is from

Also need another top D, hope we acquire suter. But i have a feeling that will be detroit or somebody

Jason Garrison would be nice, but I wonder how high Gillis would be willing to bid on him. If he wants more than $4.6M, which he might considering he scored 16 goals last year, does Gillis make him our highest paid D-man? If Salo's gone, can he afford not to?

As it stands:

Bieksa Hamhuis
Edler Ballard
Tanev Alberts
Sauve Connauton

That isn't a lot of depth.

Isn't alot of depth? thats a brutal D for a stanley cup contender!

Who knows what Edler shows up, Bieksa is only good because Hamhuis can make anybody good.

Tanev is weak and raw still. Sure hope hes gained some strength. Prob not though.

Alberts. lol

Ballard, the guy doesn't get the opportunity to play how he wants to play.

Seeing Nashvilles 3rd D come to our team and make our other D look just brutal makes me very aware at how overrated our D were, atleast they looked better in the bit Salo was healthy and Ehrhoff was on our team, ehrhoff who was one of our leading minute eaters left, nobody replaced him. Which was ridiculous. And now Salo a possible departure too? jeez

Can we please clone Hamhuis. lol

You'd need an amazing offense to win the cup with that defense and considering we are the one of the worst playoff goals for teams there is, thats not likely

It's not going to happen, but Wellwood could be an alright fit. As a stopgap centre platooned with Schroeder/someone else in the middle of the lineup until Kesler returns, and then as a playmaking winger with Kesler and Booth.

Not a whole ton out there this year, really.

I don't like Wellwood as a 3C because he avoids physical play. Unfortunately, Jokinen and Wellwood are the top two point-getting C's available. Maybe Adam Burish? He's 29 so he fits in with the age demographic of the team. He was decent on faceoffs, hits and blocked shots.

I think the Canucks will complete trades tomorrow. I guess Luongo goes to
Florida for Goc and a prospect.

I think the Canucks will try for Garrison and make salutary calls to Suter and Semin.

I imagine they will get Jacques and Rome.

I would like them to do a hockey trade with Dallas but that won't happen. Fistric and Ott would solve a lot of problems, I think.
