3M is a ridiculous amount, especially for a team short on cap space like the Kings.
Short on cap space? Do you know what are you talking about?

Or he's a 2x cup winner playing significant roles on two different teams. He's a player who'll stand up for his teammates and is very good on the cycle and punishing defenders.

What do you think of David Booth? I'd rather have Penner than Booth any day of the week when factoring contracts.

The concern is understandable, but we have loads of cap space next season since the Quick extension doesn't kick in yet, and he played outstanding in the playoffs. This deal is really for Penner to prove himself again as we were happy to have him back after the Cup run. I don't understand your cap space comment, as even with the Quick extension, we have about 7 million in cap space.

Playing with Carter and Richards for an entire season after the chemistry they had in the playoffs will likely do a lot for his point totals.

Short on cap space isn't what I meant, limited on cap space is more what I meant to say. It's okay for them though since they have a pretty damn complete roster.

I always felt like he was a good player even when he was getting crapped on hard last year.

The divorce thing last year knocked him off his game, but if you're going to make a run to the Cup you want a big body player like Penner on your squad.

The Blackhawks have never been the same after they let Byfuglien go.

He doesn't have to be the player he used to be. He has to be the player Daryl Sutter needs him to be.

GM's can do whatever they please, especially if they won the cup the prior year and the owner gives them the nod to make the deal.

We're not short on cap space and Penner took $1 million cut in pay to return. Shows some commitment to the team and management for believing in him.

Great locker room guy, Kings have great chemistry, took a pay cut, 1 year deal, last time I checked Joel Ward did not help his team win the cup, played very well after 2 things happened.

1) Got divorced from that suckubus wife, in Feb.

2) Got a coach that lit a fire under his butt.

In the era of Salary cap how many teams that win the cup have the ability to bring their entire team back...

Kings fans will love this deal.

I can understand posters who don't follow the team as closely might say WTF, but the chemistry of this team right now is unbelievable. They are a really close bunch.

So basically, we have $8 million to re-sign Dwight King and then the entire cup winning roster is back for another year. How is this bad?

Yes he married the former wife of another hockey player a few years back. She filed for divorce on him this past year.

Meanwhile Brandon Prust gets $2.5M for four years. Lots of cheddar for a role player. Penner at one year for $3.25M is a great deal for the Kings. If it doesn't workout for them, it's not like they are stuck with that contract. Let Penner prove himself this year that his playoff performance wasn't a fluke.

I think Penns will have his best year as a Kings this year, prolly somewhere between 40-45 points.

I get what your saying, sort of, but the Kings don't have holes to fill out this year. Kopitar, Brown, Williams, Carter, Richards, and Stoll are back for at least the next couple of years.

Nolan and King are RFA who won't get a massive offer sheet. Clifford still has a year or 2 on his deal I think, and whatever is left in the bottom line can be handled by folks like Westgarth and others from Manchester.

The only concern is backup goal and that isn't really a concern. Bernier still has 1 year left on his deal and if traded, the Kings can easily ask for a cheap vet backup in return and that's only because Zaktoff signed with Pittsburgh today.

The Kings will need cap room in a couple of years when Voinov, Brown a couple of others are due up for new contracts.

We can't match term or $$ for Parise and Semins isn't a fit with GM or coach so why not a 1 year deal for $3?

Great deal for the Kings....I said a month ago that a deal around 3 Million for one year would work great and let Penner re-build his value and that's exactly what we got....

He would have received 4 million on a 2 or 3 year deal easily with another team....

Now that he is signed, the Kings will bring back the entire SC lineup....I think this is an unprecedented situation, as i cannot think of any team recently that has been able to do this....

Looks like a "thanks for helping us a win a cup but you gotta prove yourself over a whole season before we commit to more than one year" type contract.

IHOP and Mrs. Butterworth are pretty stoked about this contract though.

Penner has had four seasons of 20+ goals and his seasonal low before this last year was 17. It's a pretty good bet that this last season was an anomaly, like it was for many on the team (such as Richards, with only 44pts), and that he should be able to rebound to at least 15 goals. Add 25 assists, playing with Richards and Carter, and $3.25M for 40pts is pretty reasonable in today's market, especially on a 1-year deal. He also brings a few intangibles, like his sense of humor and locker room likability.

This seemed like the right thing to do. He wanted to return and was willing to take a pay cut. He said that he left a championship team for money once and didn't want to do that again. It's nice to see a guy choose camaraderie and chemistry over bucks and the team having faith in him in rebounding.
