From what I've read on Zanon, he has a solid work ethic, blocks a load of shots and embodies a strong team first mentality.

Hopefully we still sign Carle and Sherman signed Zanon because he get a crazy offer on Hedja or O'Bryne.

Why the Avs wanted Carkner, now Zanon (signed)? No idea. Perhaps club will enlighten me
Don't worry AD, you will be the last to know.

Totally makes me forget about Carkner .

I really don't get this signing, especially after O'Brien, Wilson, and Hunwick got multi-year deals. We get a good shot blocker, but overall it seems like more of what we already have.

I'm pretty sure Avs are done. Say hello to another crappy free agency. Last year Hejda, Kobasew, this year Mitchell, Zanon, I don't know which one is worse.

Big yawn!!!!!

No kidding. I haven't watched him that closely, but he seems like Skrastins 2.0 to me.

only that Zanon hasn't played much in two years, but did get playoff time with the Bruins this spring.

They still have 3 or 4 of their own players to resign and that will probably reach the cap floor

I don't mind this if it gives Barrie and Elliot some more time in the AHL, and we get another defenseman to play with EJ.

Other wise this is a pointless signing.

There has got to be a trade in the works, as Zanon does essentially nothing for us in terms of improving our current defense. At least that is my hope. Another spot that I'd love to see us giving our young guys a chance to fill, even if we're just rotating them through from Lake Erie.

I like Zanon as a player. Very steady, great PKer. He just doesnt fill a need though.

Still a 100 times better than Carkner. The more depth the better. Still want Carle though.

As many have said, a depth signing not worth planning a parade for. All it really does is make the Avalanche's defense a bit more steady rather than upgrading it.

The Avs twitter account is being super cautious now.

I've wanted Zanon for a while now. Great team guy and a warrior. As others have said, it's just the number of bottom pairing guys we have now that concerns me. I feel a trade coming. Hejda and O'Byrne being the likely targets.

Lol not even close.

The best comparison I can find that Avs fans can relate to is: Greg deVries.

Zanon is a good skater, good passer and most importantly is a player who will play inside his means. He'll make the safe play up the boards and he plays a solid, defensive game. Don't expect a lot of offense but you guys will be happy with his play defensively for sure.

I think AB hit it right on the head when he said he may very well be the Avs best defensive d-man. This is a very good signing.

Having said all that, he's probably still just a bottom pairing guy but who knows, perhaps he can take on a bit of an expanded role on the middle pairing...remains to be seen.

I was thinking and I'm wondering if this signing is a precaution if we lose out on the higher defensemen?

Greg Zanon has been in the top 5 in blocked shots in 3 of the last 4 seasons and been in the top 10 every season since 06/07 except last season when he only played 17 games. I like this signing seen him play plenty of times as a Wild and Nashville player just still don't see the point in keeping Hunwick and O'Brien if management were planning on signing D-men on July 1 all along.
