Salo signed a 1 year deal for $2 mill last season. Have to think he was offered about the same again. I don't see that as disrespect. I don't know how a team can gamble and give this guy 2 years - he seemed like he was done at times this season. I'm very happy for Salo though. He's a consumate pro and he deserves every penny he gets - even if he's hurt half the time.
i know you don't want to risk one of the most injury-prone players of all time on a multi-year 35+ contract, but would it have been possible to get him on a low cap hit over two years with big games played performance bonuses? even if he visibly regressed this last year, would have liked to keep him just so he'd be there if we win.
though this is how i think it went down--
salo's agent: come on mike, it's got to be two years. we'll take less money.
gillis: sorry, can't do it. we'd love to have him back next season, but with bieksa and tanev already here there isn't going to be a place for him at RD once we get she... never mind.
Aside from Ohlund, my favourite Canuck defensemen since the teams resurgence with the WCE and post-Messier era. He played the game the right way, came in with a positive attitude, and I'm glad he got a great deal. Similar to Ohlund. I hope he stays healthy.
Anybody know if/when Tampa are coming to Vancouver?
One of the most respected Canucks league wide over the past few years. Really would've been nice to see Salo win a Cup with this group, but he's going to a team that should hopefully contend in the next couple years. It'd be cool if he could win one with Ohlund.
Salo was the second longest serving Canuck after the Sedins, right?
What a deal that was for us, not that Schaefer was bad for the Sens either. I'm going to miss Salo, but that trade will forever be one of my favorites for a team hamstrung by terrible deals since its inception.
