3.5 mill.... good on him (and his agent) for reeling such a dollar figure in.

Bravo, Sami. And thanks for the diligent work. Hope your equipment remains in working order, if you know what I mean.

Salo signed a 1 year deal for $2 mill last season. Have to think he was offered about the same again. I don't see that as disrespect. I don't know how a team can gamble and give this guy 2 years - he seemed like he was done at times this season. I'm very happy for Salo though. He's a consumate pro and he deserves every penny he gets - even if he's hurt half the time.

i know you don't want to risk one of the most injury-prone players of all time on a multi-year 35+ contract, but would it have been possible to get him on a low cap hit over two years with big games played performance bonuses? even if he visibly regressed this last year, would have liked to keep him just so he'd be there if we win.

though this is how i think it went down--

salo's agent: come on mike, it's got to be two years. we'll take less money.

gillis: sorry, can't do it. we'd love to have him back next season, but with bieksa and tanev already here there isn't going to be a place for him at RD once we get she... never mind.

Salo you will be missed!

Would have loved to see you back - but 3.75mill per is a little steep - best of luck and good health (emphasis on the latter)

3 Solid D-men walkaway from the team in 3 straight years.

Sucks.

We love you Sammy! All the best in Tampa.

Dammit, even if I agree with letting him go. I miss already.

He looked tired. His time here was up, and this gives us cap-space, and a clear spot on D available....

To be fair, the only mistake in that group was Ehrhoff. I love Salo but at that price, it was time.

It's better this way.

If we kept him at that contract people would have cried rivers about Gillis making a poor decision. This was the right move.

Thanks Sami.
Loved your time and contribution to this team! Super underrated and a big part of this organization. Health was an issue but when healthy, super reliable D.

Wish you the best of luck in Tampa!

Aside from Ohlund, my favourite Canuck defensemen since the teams resurgence with the WCE and post-Messier era. He played the game the right way, came in with a positive attitude, and I'm glad he got a great deal. Similar to Ohlund. I hope he stays healthy.

Anybody know if/when Tampa are coming to Vancouver?

Needed to be done. Talk about desperate ..

Seriously, Lightning? Seriously? 3.75 per yr? For 2 yrs? With his age and injury history?

Madness.

One of the most respected Canucks league wide over the past few years. Really would've been nice to see Salo win a Cup with this group, but he's going to a team that should hopefully contend in the next couple years. It'd be cool if he could win one with Ohlund.

Salo was the second longest serving Canuck after the Sedins, right?

So what?

Ohlund didnt do anything great after he left, Hoff's offensive production (which is all he's known for, really) was equalled by Edler and almost equalled by Bieksa the yr after he left.

And as for Mitchell, I'd argue that while he played a useful steady role with Kings, they won the Cup thru stellar defensive play of Doughty, with a good supporting role from the likes of Mitchell.

Peter Schaefer!

What a deal that was for us, not that Schaefer was bad for the Sens either. I'm going to miss Salo, but that trade will forever be one of my favorites for a team hamstrung by terrible deals since its inception.

Good luck in TBay, Sami. We'll miss your steady presence on the blueline. Wish he could have won a cup before his time with us was up.

It's what I wished to say as well. He deserved a cup with this team. Great player and a great person. The team will definitely be different without him on the Blue line.

Thanks for all your time here Sami, you were a class act to the fullest, and i wish you the best in Tampa Bay. I'll be following the Bolts more closely now. Will always have the memories.
