I'm so glad he is gone.
Rome is a fine bottom pairing defenceman. A lack of anything is fine - all you want from a bottom pairing is to be low event, solid defensively and to have strong physical play. Rome provides that. Not saying he's top 4 by any means, but he's a nice player to have on the bottom pairing.

Rome's pretty good as a 6/7 defender; our coaching staff just liked to overuse him.

Never was a Rome fan here in Vancouver.

One thing that's gone a but unnoticed is that he's really shied away from the physical game in the last year or so. He'll still throw big hits from time to time, but isn't consistently physical and is nowhere to be found when it comes to scrums after the whistle. He seemed much more willing to engage a couple years ago, but I think his concussion history has hurt him.

Rome is good 6/7th dman but for some reason AV loves him and plays him in a top 4 role (even on the PP) when he doesnt deserve it. A bit overpaid but honestly who doesn't get overpaid on July 1st? Basically a safe dman who does nothing special and for the most part won't stand out (either positive or negative) and isn't good enough to be the shutdown pair but good enough to eat ice time vs 3rd/4th line.

Great deal for Rome there. The security of three years plus the doubling or tripling of the salary.

More to come for Dallas.

Very marginal NHL player. Lot of his gaffes and poor coverage got bailed out by excellent goal-tending. Poor skater, who must be on top of his game to compete. Falls off that and he really looks bad. Over-rated physically as he rarely fights.

Seems to have a great attitude and is something of a leader. Good guy for team chemistry but getting paid too much here.

A 5/6 D who brings toughness, grit and reliability to the table. Good locker room guy. Good signing for Dallas.

At one point into the season 2011-2012 Rome was the best point per game and goal per game player in the entire NHL

Well we aren't going to carry 8 defensemen and our GM has already alluded to one of our prospects as having earned a spot on the roster. Whether that happens before the season or after it begins is yet to be seen but it should be pretty clear we aren't done moving bodies and bringing others in.

That's silly. It's like saying Bernier cost the Devils a Cup. Not Rome's fault half the team had debilitating injuries and the other half had no idea how to handle a puck.

Rome is very decent #6 depth dman, most of the hate from Canucks fans were because of AV's odd choice of dressing him instead of Ballard. Nothing against Rome and frankly Ballard is a high risk high reward guy, when he's on his game he's way better than Rome. Rome plays has much lower upside but you he gives 110% every night. He hits, he doesn't take chances, very consistent I would say. Nucks fan expects top 4 performance from Rome which is not going to happen.

Good depth signing for Dallas and 1.5 may seems too much for now, but when the cap goes up again next year it is about right

If you are talking about the Rome's hit on Horton then you are very wrong. That hit wasn't even attempt to injury and it was NHL who screwed Canucks over where they let Bruins got away with all those dirty plays. Rome's suspension was a joke, one game was borderline too much let alone entire series

This. To many head scratchers, "Who will play X now?" And then you got a heap of capable players who are passed over for Rome.

By losing Rome how long till you lose AV, it's just too hard to maintain a long distance relationship.

Whitney+Benn's raise will get us almost there, with another signing or two there is no need for Pardy's 2m.

Rome was the scapegoat in Vancouver. I think this signing is alright. He'll be more useful in Dallas than he was in Vancouver.

After Boston's shock of losing Horton (the beginning of the second period), the wheels started coming off for Vancouver, and they were never the same. Their facial expressions, body language, etc. were vastly different.

Yes, the eeked out a 1-0 home win, but Rome's hit was not only a game-changer, it was a series-changer.

I know everyone deserves a second chance, but it really is best he's gone from Vancouver.
The wheels came of because Hamhuis went down. It wasn't the Rome hit, it was losing the team's best defenseman and the ruination it inflicted on our defensive pairings.

This makes so much sense now with Pardy gone.
