Play a little money-puck. Sign about 5 guys (3 forwards, 1 defenseman, 1 goalie) to 1 year deals. Guys play harder in contract years.

As many of us predicted, the Devils have stepped up and are offering Martin Brodeur a 2 year contract.

Why does Marty want a 2 year deal? What if he decides to retire at the end of this season? Then what? He sounded like he was retirement bound if you asked him before January. I'm saying he sounded like it would be 60/40 he was leaning toward retirement.

What if there is a lockout? We got him on the hook for 2 years, and he already said if the whole season is gone he will likely retire.

Well they need two goalies and two defensemen. One third-line winger and one backup goalie. You need to throw some money at either a scoring winger or a goalie, at least for one year. Giving Marty $5 milllion for this year, Fayne a raise up to about $1.5-2 million and signing Moose for another couple million puts us near enough to the floor with two forward spots left.

Looks like they will be going after Semin if Parise announces he is signing elsewhere

talk about some late night 7/1 developments

I'm fine with the two years

We'll see how next year plays out and how he does and if he can still play, great, if he struggles, by '13-'14 hopefully we'll have a prospect or some other goalie ready to give it a go and split time with him in a mentoring type thing

Yeah that's the thing, I don't know why he'd insist on two years when like you said he was wary of a lockout and would be gone if there was one.

I almost hope they do give him two years though, just so NJDevs can have a meltdown. Half of them don't even want to give him one

I know it's bad, but I honestly don't give a ****. Give him the extra year. He's earned it.

PLENTY of cap space to do it...not really a concern imo.

By year 2 Marty may be tutoring Wedge or KinKaid - I think 2 years is fine. Lou said Marty will be a Devils as long as he wants to. Well apparently he wants 2 more years.

You don't let Brodeur walk. He's done enough for us in 18 years, let's return a favor.

Gotta get Moose signed too. Really don't know if I want Kinkaid or Frazee as a full time backup. Would be cool to see them start a few games this year. Would be nice just to see what they can do, but if Marty goes down we might not get lucky again like we did with Clemmensen. We had a better defensive system then too. Marty has went down with injury for 2 years straight now, and 3 of the last 4 years.

Even Lou said he expects Frazee, Kinkaid, Clermont, and Wedgewood to battle it out in the AHL for 2, and the other 2 go to the ECHL. He made it sound like those guys won't be backups.
