If Minnesota signs Parise and they have a couple of other big ticket guys in Heatly, Koivou they may want to free themselves from the contract of Niklas Backstrom.
I would jump at the chance to trade for him.
He is on tap to earn $6 million in 2012 in the last year of his deal.
He has been really a solid goalie for years.
Minny may want a cheaper option in Schrivens to pair with recently resigned Josh Harding.
If we want to upgrade our goaltending it will have to be via trade because unless Burke wants to be the guy who goes 10 years 75 million offer sheet on Carey Price I doubt we are getting anywhere.

Why go 10 years 75 million a young goalie like Price when you can go 10 years 53million for an older goalie like Luongo.
Seriously (and it is probably not you) but what is it with fans who defend Burke not acquiring a Parise/Suter because of long (and expensive contracts) but become all excited and supported of a long contract for an older player?
I don't think there are any viable options anymore that would be such an improvement over Reimer that we stunt his development. I'll blame Reimer's struggles last year on a sophomore slump, the injury and our horrible D. With McClement, and 1/4th of LACK gone, we'll see what he can do.

Id argue that bryan elliot would be dealt before Halak. Both goaltenders played on similiar level most of the season...they were a product of their enviroment but since Elliot came out the gates hot hell have the bigger trade value.
Anyhow we cant go into a season with two unproven commodities to fill both goaltending positions just like last. Either Burke signs a proven starter or backup or we can be in trouble once again.
Burke is going to roll with Reimer/Scrivens. If he wanted to bring in a veteran guy to platoon with Reimer there were tons of chances to do so already.
I'm not interested... He'd be too costly and he really is not proven.
He isn't very big either...
Scrivens or Reimer would need to go on waivers to go to the Marlies, so I think the Leafs will have to go with the two of them or trade for a veteran and include one of these guys in the deal...
Interesting comments from Brodeur regarding the leafs trying to sign him
Quote:
For me it could've been a fit but ultimately when Lou (Lamiorello) came back with that extra year, that made a big difference. They seemed like they were really interested,” he said. “But I know that the organization is making the right steps for them."
To me this is a mistake by Burke to not offer what he wants. To me, the extra year is absolutely nothing. If he is good enough to still back-up, great, if not, Brodeur is not the type to end his career in the AHL. The only thing i could imagine a two year deal would pose issues for is stalling a chance for another young player to get a start or two, but i don't think this outweighs the option to bring in a proven veteran, stabilizing presence. I don't know what proven legit goalie would be willing to come in on a 1 year deal. Unless he plans on trading for a goalie, i don't see any way it won't be Reimer/Scrivens to start the season.

I think you missed a pretty important part:
"Brodeur said his No. 1 priority was getting a two-year contract from the Devils".
For all you know, Burke may have offered two years OR once he got the offer of 2 from NJ, since he stated that was his #1 priority, he may not have come back to Toronto to see if he could get it increased.
People need to understand that just because you express interest in people, they may have other wants that are more important to them personally. That quote certainly seems to suggest it. If that's the case, pretty hard to blame somebody or claim they made a mistake.
