Gives us a "option B" in case either Bieksa or Edler get hurt - have Garrison take a more offensive role if that happens. Or let Tanev take that spot & have Garrison back him up.
Always good to give the coaching staff multiple options instead of defensive pairings that are 'set in stone' (like Hamhuis-Bieksa).
Yep. I'm almost worried, because he seems to be so perfectly what the Canucks need on the back end.
I'm not talking about puck rushing like Ehrhoff, but more about not being afraid to jump into a hole in the offensive zone, or to step up and make a pinch at the line.
Ah, that makes sense. As long as our coaching staff isn't making Edler do what Ehrhoff did than we're fine. I still disagree with the re-signing of AV and Bowness.
Edler is completely uncomfortable playing that role.. Edler pushes the pace by make great outlet passes. Ehrhoff was the one who added the immense amount of pressure afterward. Edler looked completely awkward trying to do what Ehrhoff did.
I agree, Edler is not a slick skating puck rusher.
Hes a big lanky dman with great outlet passes.
Garrison is also a big dman.
I think we might see something like:
Hamhuis-edler
Garrison-bieksa
I remember edler/hamhuis looking pretty good together.
Garrison had 124 blocked shots last year. This would be 2nd overall on our defense, only behind Edler. If Garrison and Edler are paired together, that's a lot of blocked shots.
I wouldn't compare him to Hamhuis. Hamhuis is an amazing skater that can really move the puck and has very high hockey iq, but doesn't have much offensive creativity. Garrison is more comparable to Salo than anyone else on our team, although he's better defensively than Salo has been in a long time (and maybe ever).
SO he's pretty much what Salo was when he was a better skater. Thanks for the info though greatly appreciated.
Yep same. Thought he was just a tad over 200, but man 225 that's solid. Anyone know how good of a skater he is?
Not elite speed, but from what I've heard, he's a pretty decent skater. Skates well enough to get the job done.
And I just want to point out - guiys, we didn't get him for the offense. His bomb on the powerplay is nice, and very useful. But it's not about piling up points, imo, we got a very sound defensive defenseman. Very reliable for shutting down the other team - this is exactly what we needed imo. We win july 1.
WHAT!? NONONONONONONONONONO! He's not Mitchell, not Komisarek, not Finger. Not Hamhius either, but he's closer to him than the other guys. I don't know you guys are getting these comparisons from but that's definitely not the Garrison I watched.
Welcome to what it is like to be a Canuck fan on this board. Garrison is awesome... until he signs with Vancouver. Now he sucks.
Job is only half complete.....Ballard has to be moved.
Why? Who would replace him?
He and Tanev are a pretty good bottom pairing, I'm happy with keeping Ballard for now. There aren't better (realistic) options in the free agent pool, and we have plenty of cap space to sign a top 6 forward.
No, you just don't understand what Garrison brings. It's not all about points.
I took wreckless's comments like he was making fun of the people who say he's only had one good season when he's not even played three yet. I though he was supporting Garrison, not being negative.

Yeah, I wouldn't be comfortable giving that ice time to Alberts.

I could be wrong though.
I must've read it wrong then. My apologies if I did.
There will be talk that his conditioning isn't up to Canuck standards and such. He loses his confidence and becomes a wreck defensively. AV plays the part of the abusive partner. It writes itself.
What is it about the internet that makes it so hard for people to acknowledge two sides of an issue?
Yes, Garrison brings some positive attributes and there are reasons to be hopeful he meaningfully upgrades our defence.
Yes, there are aspects to his game (small sample size, Florida) that give reason to keep expectations subdued until performance is demonstrated on our own ice.
Time will tell. Personally, I'd rather see this than another Marco Sturm type move.
Haha, if it's because Tanev has a break-out year as a lock for the top-four spot and Ballard and Garrison mesh as the world's most gifted third pairing, I won't complain.
