I know a lot of people are high on Holzer, but where do people see his upside realistically, are we talking top pairing defenseman or what? Kind of gotten mixed reviews thus far.

Ceiling is a shut down 2nd pairing dman, I expect him to be a bottom paring dman or a #7 guy.

I hope Holzer developed as much as this board is suggesting, I thought he looked absolutely terrible when he played his couple games here.. And yes I understand it's unfair to judge him based off of that.

Yeah why is it one or the other? Why cant the Leafs have both. Other teams have multiple star players. Toronto certainly should.

With the way that Komisarek/Franson play defence, there is a good chance that Holzer can happen slide right into the #2 on the right side. Liles and Gardiner play the left side so they are not really ahead of him.

Basically Holzer can move up because Franson/Komisarek struggle at defence.

I would say: Grabovski+Kulemin+Holzer for Ryan. Ducks have expressed interest in Holzer in the past.
I don't see how Leafs improve with this deal at all! Centers don't grow on trees, as evident by the last 2 years of searching for a legitimate #1. Now we trade our #2 center for another winger?

Also, trading Kulemin now would be selling at his lowest possible value. Where is the logic there? I love the guy, but he had a rough season last year for several reasons and there is no way we would get good value in return even if we signed him before the trade. IMO, Kulemin WILL have a bounce back season and perform well on the 2nd line for the Leafs this year. If the time comes to trade him it would be at the next draft or summer (depending on our performance).

just my 2 cents...

Ryan
Lupul
Kessel
JVR

That would be one hell of of a top 6 winger core.

I see where you're coming from, and I really hope Holzer can surprise and be able to step into that 2nd pairing with Gardiner because having 2 offensive minded D men on the 2nd pairing would be rough. We saw that all too much last year.

Actually, if we consolidated a package of prospects into a Bobby Ryan and he has a big year, it makes it easier to do a one for one for a big time center than to try to make another package...

NO WAY Connolly is a #2 center. Not even close!

Exclude last year, a healthy Connolly is very much a #2 center.

I can see him as a solid #4-5 shutdown guy, ala Schenn and Aulie but a lower ceiling overall (offensively and defensively)

Kid,

What happened to his career? Wiped out because he had a mediocre year on a lousy leaf team?

Exhibit A of a fanbase allowing someone's salary to blindly dictate their worth/history.

He's easily a #2C.

I would be happy if he doesn't cost us any games like Schenn or Komisarek. I don't want to notice the guy, that's when he's effective.

Sorry for the late response, but his skating is NHL level, you won't say what you would with Schenn and go "holy crap you're so slow" but you also won't expect to see him turn around and keep up with some of the faster players.

He's an average skater, nothing to complain about but nothing that jumps out at you.

I don't even find Connolly overpaid. His PPG since the lockout has been impressive.

Holzer should be useful on the PK. Komisarek is terrible is this situation because he has zero sense of where he needs to be. Just chases the puck and leaves guys wide open in front of the net. Holzer's IQ will make a big difference.

I think the wing position is fairly set longterm. We have options such as Kessel, JVR, Kadri, Frattin, Kulemin, Lupul, Biggs, Ashton, etc.

The assets needed to get Ryan could be better served getting a young goalie and/or a young centre IMO.

I think adding Ryan to our lineup will make us a playoff team overnight.
Mac + Kulemin + Holzer + prospect for Ryan.

Lupul - Grabo - Ryan
JVR - Bozak - Kessel

Rolling wingers that good, I think it almost doesn't matter who your centers are. They'll just make the whole team better.
