As for the OP, I don't think Phaneuf is a liability, but the only way he gets us a centre back is if it's Stastny, and I don't think either team would make that move. $6M contracts don't get moved for value returns.
I think Phaneuf is a massive liability. But does he hold enough value to garner a capable top 6 center? Phaneuf + for Getzlaf possibly ?
*sigh*
Yes, one of the top scoring defenseman in the league last year, and playing around 26 minutes a night, and the captain of the team, this is the guy who is a massive liability.
Maybe we'd be lucky to trade him to Winnipeg for tickets to the Bieber concert...
It's hard to gauge. I mean, assuming we all live under a rock, don't watch hockey and don't research our opinions at all, I think it would be pretty hard to negotiate more in a trade than a 7th and extremely bad contract.
Probably Wade Redden and cond. 7th from NYR that they win triple consecutive Stanley Cups... something like that...
You do realize that hockey is a game of mistakes don't you? If there were no mistakes or misques no goal would ever be scored. Fact is every player makes mistakes, even the best players in the league can be made to look foolish by their opponents on occasion. Yes, Phaneuf does make mistakes on occasion, but he is playing against the best forwards in the best league in the world and like it or not any defenseman playing against these guys will mess up on occasion...
Just being moot here but if there were no mistakes it would create a paradoxical state akin to the unstoppable cannon ball and the unbreakable wall paradox.
Presumably, the defense would be unbreakable and the offence unstoppable...
lol Leafs fans ... we suck every year, then you guys defend your crappy players to the death and wonder why we're the joke of the league
I dont wholly disagree but in fairness its possible to have a garbage team and still have a handful of good players worthy of defending. I'm not saying Phaneuf is an example...I'm just sayin.

Oh I wouldnt be arguing if we were defending Kessel, Lupul or Gardiner, or anyone else whose proven to be an asset... but its Phaneuf.
What has Gardiner done to earn your affection, other than his age.
Solid defensive play combined with great skating, and decent play-making and offensive ability.
Most of the time I see a 2 on 2 rush with Phaneuf, he just goes for the big hit, misses, and then there's a 2 on 1 against us. That's why hes a defensive liability, that I feel should be traded.

On average how many times do you think that happens a game? 1? 5? 15? Probably higher if it's "most of the time".

You don't watch the leafs, do you?
He does pinch at the blue line..and does throw big hits; however he's probably the best open ice hitter in the NHL today; in saying that he picks his time and is very accurate with the boom. Hell IMO his reputation keeps more guys to the outside, you know the saying, " should have known who he was on the ice against" -> that guy they are talking about you need to know is on the ice, is Dion.
I'd be fine with trading Phaneuf for a #1 center if we have another trade to go with it that brings another #1 defenseman to Toronto. Yandle? Although it would more likely be JBow. If JBow is the guy we would end up getting to replace Phaneuf, I think most people would rather just keep Phaneuf.

There are many reasons to trade Dion and if we could get value for him we should. He is not a bad D men......I truly believe that Carlyle and him will not see eye to eye on many different areas.....I do not think he is a number one D man. He is good offensively and ok Defensively. I watch him stand in front of his net while his partner is running around covering everywhere else. He seldom rotates on coverage on the PK.....poor D zone reads and D zone give aways are problematic. He picks his spots physically as well.
Before anyone tells me that I'm not watching the games...... I do watch the games all of them.
Papers have frequently reported issues as well, but so many on here call the reporters hacks etc.
Still waiting to see some quotes from actual players...
Really hope you're not citing anyone that chooses to remain anonymous. Cause it wouldn't be the first time a reporter fabricated a source to stir the pot.
don't forget to backup this statement too:
Quote:
He is not a leader at all and blames others for everything. Hence me calling him the human turnstile.....he is the reason for at least 2 players getting traded and likely 3.
