Depends if they are comfortable having half the salary cap going towards both Staals, Nash, Ruutu, and Ward.
With Skinner as RFA after this year. And a lackluster defense.
Even if we somehow get Nash, and assuming Skinner isn't a part of the package, he'll get re-signed, IMO. Skinner sells jerseys and tickets in Carolina, he can't afford to let him go.
Oh, and JR is convinced that Joe Corvo will once again be the guy who fixes the Carolina Hurricanes defense, while in reality, he'll make it worse, again. Lackluster defense is the Hurricanes' middle name.
Does the cap even matter anymore? It's nearly doubled in 6 years. Large market teams can keep bumping up against it, and then come next offseason, it grows enough to let them sign the next big free agent.
(no not bitter about losing a season of hockey or anything...)
Yeah, the larger issue for me is the floor. The floor is now 54 million.
Yeah, the clowns on the other sides of these deals best be more flexible than their fans/reporters.
The Sharks can refuse to give Couture because they are offering real value. If Carolina isn't offering Skinner and NYR aren't offering Stepan I'm not sure what value they think they are offering. We're back to the possibility of only picks/prospects and that doesn't give me warm fuzzies.
Carolina seems just like the Rangers to me. Strength in young d. Potential reluctance to part with NHL-caliber young forwards. That does little for me.
I like McBain and Murphy sounds promising, but how can fans be down on deals with the Rangers that involve Del Zotto, but totally cool with deals from the Canes?
Hell, even Zak Dalpe just strikes me as a variation on J.T. Miller right down to the Ohio ties.
Not a slam on Carolina (or the Rangers for that matter). The the players mentioned have promise. They don't, however, strike me as filling the key needs of this team. And dammit, if we're trading the biggest chip this team has ever had, Howson better get at least get one freaking piece that addresses that.

Doesn't make sense does it..
1) No young forwards other than the Staal brothers
2) No real top prospects that are forwards
3) No elite young defenseman expect maybe Faulk who is a smaller guy
Has to be Skinner right? I wonder if he's entering a contract year and there is fear they wouldn't be able to sign him. Only thing I can think of...then again how much risk would we be taking him for 1 year then having him bolt as well.
Parise & Sutter need to get their thumbs out of their butts and sign already...
Given the latest from Portzline, that there have been "limited" talks about Bobby Ryan, I'd take the Sharks deal and work a deal for Ryan, even if it did mean giving up Ryan Johansen in the process.

If the Sharks deal includes a goalie, you've got a TEAM!
Nash for Pavelski, Niemi, Prospect, 1st
Johansen and Mason for Ryan

I really don't want to trade Johansen, but I would to get Ryan. As long as we aren't giving up too much more. I would worry about getting another center some other way. I don't think you can turn down the chance at getting Ryan.

Take a look at our pipeline. We've got centers baking in the oven.

Flyers interloper here...
I'd be interested in seeing what else Anaheim would ask for above Johansen. At least some reports suggested that they wanted Voracek + Schenn from the Flyers--so I'm not sure tagging Mason on (who the Ducks don't need and likely wouldn't want) would get the job done.
Apparently, they are looking for both a 2C and a top-six winger.
