The EV ZUG is looking for a fourth foreigner in addition to Josh Holden, Jussi Markkanen and Andy Wozniewski. According to the "Neue Luzerner Zeitung", Zug is after center Kyle Wellwood and winger Niklas Hagman.
Both players remain without a contract in the NHL. Wellwood was already of interest two years ago and could fill the vacant position after the departure of Glen Metropolits (Lugano).
Back then he chose a short Russian adventure over Zug, but then returned to the NHL. Otherwise, the 29-year-old has played exclusively in the NHL since 2005. Last season he scored 18 goals and 29 assists in 77 games for the Winnipeg Jets. Overall he got 90 goals and 150 assists in 490 NHL games including playoffs.
Excuse mistakes, it was done in a hurry. Only the first two paragraphs, third is about Hagman, says he also has an offer from Lokomotiv Jaroslawl.
I think he (or his agent) is asking for more money/term than he's worth based on his past season. He's worth a decent amount of money but if he's holding out there GMs are going to call his bluff on it.
Are you kidding after a 47 point season how isn't he worth 2 million a year?
Agreed. 2mil a year for Wellwood is a heck of a deal. I'd take him back in Vancouver on a 1 year deal for that price. He can play wing or center and has enough versatility to play up and down the line up.
I suppose he means for Burke's poor asset management and waiving Wellwood who was acquired by the Canucks for nothing. The leafs were hurting for talent back than and he could have at least generated some value in a trade.
What kind of contracts can these Swiss teams offer up? I've been all over Switzerland and while the cost of living is very high, the quality of life is higher. I'm surprised there's not more players considering there. It's a fairly competitive league, no?
