Overpaying for Parise DOES hurt the roster. It hurts the roster tremendously. It ties our hands in trying to meet needs in the future, it makes paying all of our young talent infinitely more difficult, it potentially saddles us with an unmoveable contract for a decade. What if Parise settles into a slow decline into a 25-30 goal 65 pt. forward?
And we don't need to replace guys who were non-factors.
My read on the NJ series is not that we need more offense. It is that we need time for our young forwards, who were all over the place in that series, to gel and develop a tight team game and we need a stud defender who can control the pace of the game. I'm all for acquiring an elite winger at the right price, in both dollars and player assets, but it isn't the most pressing need right now and we don't need to force it just to do something.
Parise isn't going to be overpaid now (in terms of cap hit), he's going to be overpaid several years from now.
4 or 5 years is a long time to prepare for having an overpaid player on your hands.
I sure hope Homer is putting pressure on his plan Bs to sign now instead of waiting. This is getting ridiculous already.
I think this is why Parise and Suter are taking their time. These teams waiting on them are losing their backup options which ups the pressure for these teams to sign them. One or more teams may end up deciding to increase their offers to get them signed out of desperation. I don't buy for one second they are just indecisive. This is all about money IMO.
Who cares? It's one year, and Dallas had a ton of cap room anyway. They have 12 forwards signed and the last one is Benn who is an RFA. 5 Defensemen and you assume Fistric will resign another RFA. Without those 2 or a back up goalie signed they still have over 20 million in cap space
And they were 29th in attendance last year. This deal makes complete sense for them financially.
The Flyers are in a different position. Just because it wouldn't make sense for us doesn't mean it doesn't make sense for Dallas.
If the Flyers get skunked in free agency, then everyone better prepare for Holmgren to go nuts with regards to trades. That scares me more than anything because you can bet that everyone other than Giroux is going to be in play. For the love of God, please let Peter Lukko rein in Holmgren if he's going nuts and contemplating moving either Schenn or Couturier....
Honestly, I think we need to brace for a 7 year, $42 million dollar contract to Matt Carle.
This team will not enter the season with this much cap space.

I don't see them using absurd cap space on Matt Carle just for the hell of it. There's a reason Holmgren used the term "hometown discount" when talking about Carle.
If they can save enough cap space to be relevant buyers at the trade deadline, I think the FO would find that preferable.
Carle has passed. I can't remember the last time a flyer that went to FA re-signed with the team.
A fair point, but I also can't remember the last time this team entered the season with $6 million in free cap space in their pocket either.
I don't think they would throw the money at Carle just to spend it; I think the free space would lead them to discount the gap between what they were prepared to pay (say, $4.75) and what other teams might offer him.
Again, I'm not endorsing the course; just predicting it. We'll see soon enough, I guess.

To be fair, this is the first time that Snider has said he's had enough of overpaying for vets, and that the flyers need to start developing their own players.

Has he said that recently? It doesn't seem to be working if Homer is chasing Parise and Suter with insane offers.
Carle reminds me of the Leino situation. The Flyers talked all season about wanting to bring Leino back but blamed tagging space for not signing him during the season. Come free agency someone else payed more than they were willing so the Flyers signed Jagr. The Flyers will probably sign a veteran question mark now that they have Luke Schenn to take his place.
Well I didn't see Dallas coming... It was a fun year, although I'm not sure whether Jagr will be able to survive without being Pittsbooed once a month. Hope he does well in Dallas though. Our TOP6 still looks great, even without JVR and Jagr.
Would it be the end of the world if the Flyers don't go all out this year, spend to the cap, try and be a cup contender, rather they let their young players develop?

I wouldn't be opposed, necessarily, but it isn't really the Flyers style, and I'm guessing that Briere, Timonen, etc. might not love the idea of settling for lowered expectations.

I know it's not their style, but their impatience doesn't lead to championships so why not try something different? Timonen may be gone in a year and if Briere is so unhappy he can waive his NMC.

Wrote Tocchet, "If I were Flyers, I would have my attention on Doan and a couple of second tier d-man ...stay with the young core and grab Weber next year."
Sign Doan, Fedetenko/Langkow, and Roszival/Hannan
then trade for Suter at the deadline or sign next off season.
