Jordan Staal extension - $60 million/10 years

as per McKenzie

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Jordan Staal agrees to terms with CAR. 10 years, $60M. Done.

Canes Link: http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=636659

Quote:
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Jordan Staal on a 10-year contract extension. The deal begins with the 2013-14 NHL season and extends through the 2022-23 season, paying Staal $6 million per season.

“We are very pleased that Jordan has chosen to commit to the Hurricanes organization and to make North Carolina his home,” said Rutherford. “At 23 years old he is just starting to come into his prime, and he now represents a cornerstone of our franchise for the long term.”

Good contract. $6 mil a year is fair for what he brings.

Nice. I was thinking he would get closer to 7.

This leaves cap room for years to come.

This deal kind of confirms what I had speculated to myself. The Hurricanes will be Jordan's team, not Eric's, sooner rather than later. The Rutherford comments ("top 15 player in the league") and this ten-year deal lead me to believe that Jordan is viewed as the franchise player of the near future for this team.

I'm down with this. Kindof had expected a 7 year deal (insurance purposes) but 6 mil per is exactly what I expected, and he would have been pushing 7 million as a UFA.

It's almost Toews money, but we'll see how he does in a scoring role, especially if he develops some chemistry with Skinner or one of the Finns.

Excellent signing for you guys. 6 million is very fair even if he's just an outstanding 2-way 2nd line center. If he grows into a #1 then it's an incredible value. Wonder if JR will thank Shero for the framework of the deal. Seems all he had to do was take the Pens deal and offer the same thing. Just with more role/opportunity in Carolina without Sid and Geno around.

I am not sure why this "confirms" that? If anything it sounds like a play to keep all of the Staals in one place. You have to hope that Eric wouldn't leave Jordan behind when his deal expires.

Isn't this the exact same deal he turned down from Pittsburgh?

Yeah, I'm not sure how it "confirms" Jordan as the franchise player either. Eric's still making more than $2 mil a year more than Jordan at this point. Eric will be resigned when his contract's a year from being up too.

It was just my personal opinion. It seems like Rutherford has made such a significant investment in Jordan, both through the pieces he dealt to acquire him and the length of the contract extension he signed him to, that it shows he views Jordan as THE GUY for the Hurricanes moving forward.

Yep. I wonder if it is somewhat front loaded though. That seems to be the new thing around the league. Crosby's new deal averages 12 million/per for the first 3 years. I hope to God he stays healthy.

Wow, that's quite a deal. Basically signed him for the duration of his usefulness as a premier player.

I'm quite happy with 6 a year though. Imagine how that's gonna look in 2022.

I do like reading the "over-payment" comments on the main board, then scrolling down and reading "Dennis Wideman, signs for 5 years @5.2 mill per year".

They invested the #2 overall pick in one of the best drafts ever in Eric, as well as signing him to the richest deal ever for this team. Expect them to offer a similar long-term deal to Eric when his deal expires, but expect it to still be 2M-3M more than Jordan. This isn't Jordan's team anymore than it's Skinner's team.

There's also no way Jordan hasn't consulted with Eric about this and his long-term plans. I'm sure Eric isn't planning on going anywhere.

Proteau from THN put it best:

Adam Proteau ‏@Proteautype

BEWARE: If you compare this deal to Wideman's, your head explodes a la Scanners. RT @TSNBobMcKenzie: Jordan Staal signs w/ CAR. 10 yrs, $60M

Don't worry about those comments. He's worth every bit of 6 million/per. I say that having watched basically every game of his pro career. He's capable of being one of your top 2 centers, your top pk guy, top defensive forward at ES and can probably score over 30 goals too. He had 31 goals in 68 games counting playoffs last season.

I think you're out to lunch. I also believe that this favoritism wedge that you're attempting to drive in between Eric and Jordan is completely unnecessary.

In fact, all of those arguments can also be made to show that JR is solidifying Eric as The Man in Carolina...he did all of that to ensure that Eric remains happy to be here for the rest of his career.

Some really dumb comments on the main board. One sens fan even said it's the worst contract in the league

People have either not seen much of him or are just looking at stat lines. For everything he brings and the untapped offensive potential many believe he still has the term is fine. The length may be a little bit much but the money is fine I think.

The Penguins were also willing to give this guy 10 years and 60 million. It didn't mean he was The Guy over Crosby or Malkin. It was just an opportunity to lock up a core player long-term at a great cap hit. I'd read nothing more into it.
