Zatkoff (UFA) Signs with Penguins

http://kings.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=636616

It's listed about 10 or so lines down...

Didn't see a thread for it so figured I'd make one. Even though it was mentioned in the Frenzy thread, he was part of our org. so it needed a thread. Maybe.

Yup he was an UFA, Manchester wants to hand the reigns to Jones it seems.

Knew it was only a matter of time until he left. He wasn't in the Kings future.

Jones/Berube this year, Gibson/??? next year. Jones will be an OK backup somewhere down the line. I expect the Kings to ride veterans at the top level and try to develop stars or move on from their goalie prospects.

We will probably draft another goalie next season.

Kings always invite a few CHL goalie prospects to development camp. That's how Martin Jones got noticed by the Kings and was eventually signed. They could go that route this summer or just sign a veteran third string goalie to a two-way deal (like they did with Jean-Sebastien Aubin years ago).

He was never going to make it onto the Kings roster instead of Martin Jones. Wish him the best.

Looks like Martin Jones gets the full-time starting gig....He looked so good that first season he played in Manchester and then went slightly backwards last year, but i still think this guy has a fairly high ceiling....Could be a decent goalie in the NHL one day, as he has great size....

Well I guess that settles the dust as far as the who goes where with the goaltending prospects.

On a side note, I do find it funny the description of the Penner re-signing.

Quote:
LA TIMES REPORTS SAY WE'RE BRINGING PENNER BACK. IF THAT'S THE CASE, THIS TEAM COULD BE THE EXACT ROSTER THAT WON IT ALL LAST SEASON AND ROLLED 16-4 THROUGH THE PLAYOFFS. NOT BAD.
Why are the LA Kings relying on the LA Times to report their own signings? Wouldn't the Kings know whether or not this is true? If the Times is wrong, then why publish it on their site? Strikes me as a funny way to put things.

Jeff will fail to crack The Big Club, then will be let go by Pitt.
He will join ex-King Matt Moulson on Long Island and win 35-40 games
several seasons in a row.

(beware ex-Kings)

Have you read some of the other descriptions? Some oe them are just the Kings trolling hard... It's kind of awesome. Highlights include the one for Ebbett, McGratton, Salo, Hordichuk, Parenteau, Asham, and my personal favorite;

Oh for sure the others were amusing. Just found it odd that the LA Kings are reporting that the LA Times is reporting the LA Kings have signed Penner. Just an oddly worded description, then again I suppose the writer (who likely doubles as the Kings' Twitter feed) might not have access to the internal workings of the Kings.

The way Rich Hammond reports, I often think the Kings have a separate media division that works like a third party news organization and not a part of the Kings' PR team. So the Twitter writer (who I suppose could be Hammond for all we know), could be a part of the "Kings Media Network."

He definitely had promise, though it seems he must have regressed in Manchester, since Martin Jones took over the lion's share of the starts partway through the year. I always thought the progression (a couple years ago when Quick was in LA, Bernier in Manchester and Zatkoff in Ontario) was Quick would tend the net until Bernier was ready and then likely Zatkoff would take over after a few years of Bernier.

Obviously, with the development of Quick this has changed. I love the fact that for the first time since Kelly Hrudey (not that I am comparing him to Quick), the Kings actually have a definite starter going into training camp. When Hrudey left, there was a revolving door of goalies. Then again, I guess it allowed the Kings to be part of history by starting Yutaka Fukufuji, the first Japanese trained player in the NHL.

If you start with the 2007 draft (which was DL's first draft with his own scouting staff) we've drafted a goalie every second year. 2013 is the next time we're due to grab a goalie, so it would not chock me.

I'm very surprised Zatkoff would sign on the very first day of UFA with a team where he has almost no chance to be the backup since he's behind Fluery and Vokoun.
