Week of July 9th-15th - Thursday Papers

Thursday, July 12th Jets and General NHL news

Note: I’m off to Lake of the Woods for a few days but fear not as the rest of the IC Team will be picking up the slack. Enjoy the rest of the Jets Development Camp and stay tuned to @illegalcurve as always for all the latest news.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Klingberg’s a cool customer. No question that Klingberg is a character. You could see that the young Swede had a ton of personality in the few games he played in Winnipeg last season. Can he make the jump to the NHL this season?

Winnipeg Free Press: Departing Stapleton will cheer for Jets from afar. It was pretty clear in Stapleton’s tweet yesterday that he didn’t want to leave the Peg’, although he probably should have used a Jake Jarmel explanation point, as opposed to a question mark.

Winnipeg Sun: Sutter born competitive. Sometimes your last name can be a boon or a curse. Sutter is trying to be his own person and not worry about the name on the back of his jersey. While that is easier said than done, he has shown some good poise through the first 3 days of camp.

Winnipeg Sun: Cooking lesson part of recipe for success. All part of the team building process. Some of these relationships that are formed today, will endure for years to come.

Winnipeg Sun: Meanness key for Jets’ blue-liner. Sol is the biggest guy in camp and will be looking to make his mark in the pro ranks next season.

Illegal Curve: Day 3 Audio from Development Camp. Coach Noel, Mark Scheifele, Jacob Trouba and Peter Stoykowich.

NHL news:

Arizona Republic: Glendale rejects group’s attempt to overturn sales-tax increase. Sweet, sweet technicalities. Fact of the matter is that if you have to submit a document, you had best have it properly filled out and filed if you hope to push forward with your agenda.

FS North: Wild have gained attention throughout NHL. You can feel the excitement for next season in Minnesota. As someone tweeted…Winter is Coming! (HBO Game of Thrones reference for those scratching their heads).

CSN Washington: Son of Iafrate admits he’s out there, too. If he has a shot like his dad’s perhaps a team or two will give him a shot. Perhaps a bit more seasoning will help him develop the necessary skills to make it as a pro.

Toronto Sun: Doan pushes back contract deadline. Much like the Coyote situation in Glendale, Doan just can’t get things done in the time allotted.

Globe and Mail: Modano, Lamoriello and Olczyk headline U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame class. Three deserving guys who have well represented USA Hockey.

Monday Papers

Monday, July 9th Jets and General NHL news

Jets news:

Don’t forget to stay tuned to @illegalcurve all week as the Jets as we will be at the Development Camp starting today at 2:15 pm. We will also have audio on site from these young guns.

Winnipeg Free Press: Some future Jet stars on ice this week in ‘Peg. If you are coming to watch the young guns at the Jet development camp, Ed gives you some players to watch this week at the IcePlex. If you are curious of the times we posted that info in yesterday’s papers.

Winnipeg Sun: Wheat Kings goalie invited to camp. Big opportunity for the Saskatoon product who has been plying his trade in Brandon.

NHL news:

Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Parise, Suter news conference today. Might not be quite the show we received when Lebron and company delivered ‘The Decision’ but should be interesting to hear what these guys have to say about the process.

Arizona Republic: Phoenix Coyotes’ Shane Doan ready to look over options. It is clear he doesn’t want to leave the desert after making it his home for the past decade and a half. However with the ownership uncertainty and his knowledge that this is his last big opportunity for a payday, the Yotes and Doan are looking less and less certain.

The Tennessean: Nashville Predators should pay Shea Weber or trade him. Cannot afford to lose him for nothing the way they lost Suter.

Calgary Herald: As prospects convene, Flames aim to fill holes. Is this the last year the Flames ‘go for it’ before the re-build?

The Detroit News: Nicklas Lidstrom remaining with Wings in front-office role. With him planning on returning to Sweden, it appears that Detroit will have a solid Euro scout in Northern Europe.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show replay:

Part 1: Reviewing the Winnipeg Jets roster moves. Jets sign Olli Jokinen, Alexei Ponikarovsky, A; Montoya, lose Tanner Glass, Chris Mason. Potential Winnipeg Jets line combinations for 2012-13. Interview with Rick Peckham, play-by-play voice of the Tampa Bay Lightning for Sun Sports. Free Agency Recap: Southeast Division. Free Agency Recap: Northeast Division. Minnesota Wild sign Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.

Part 2: Interview with Mike Greenlay, colour analyst for the Minnesota Wild on Fox Sports North. Free Agency Recap: Atlantic Division. Free Agency Recap: Central Division. Free Agency Recap: Northwest Division. Free Agency Recap: Pacific Division. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, July 10th Jets and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Telegin in town, but will miss camp with injury. Oh right, that other guy from the Barrie Colts with a ton of talent!

Winnipeg Free Press: Learning what it takes to be a pro. From the scrum that was held with Jimmy Roy after the skate yesterday, he seems to have done a lot of research into the best ways to run a Development Camp. Obviously the results of his methods won’t be known for a few years but it appears to be as good as an approach as any. If you’d like to hear what Roy had to say, we have him plus Sutter and Schiefele in our Day 1 audio clips.

Winnipeg Free Press: When you’re a Sutter, certain things are expected. There can be both pros and cons to having name brand recognition.

Winnipeg Sun: Draft-pick Trouba welcomed to Winnipeg. Appears that the Jets first round picks are adopting the #45 as their first jersey number. Trouba looked good on the ice although he was unable to bring his noted physicality into play.

Winnipeg Sun: Georgia-born Jets prospect looks for second chance. Life is all about learning from your mistakes, both on and off the ice.

Winnipeg Sun: Kitchener Rangers sue student newspaper. Memo to self, don’t publish any news about Kitchener Rangers. They mean business. Trouba, in the scrum put the rumours to rest once and for all, when he declared he is going to the University of Michigan next year.

Winnipeg Free Press: Hundreds of fans attend Jets development camp opening. A pretty good atmosphere if you wanted to get out of the +30 temperatures to enjoy the cool MTS IcePlex. Lots of fans, young and old, took in Day 1 of the Development Camp.

Illegal Curve: Development Camp roster. If you are curious who is attending camp and what number they are wearing we have you covered.

Illegal Curve: Reviewing Olli Jokinen’s Assists in 2011-12. Richard reviews the 38 assists he had during the 2011-12 season.

NHL news:

Toronto Sun: Doan to start considering offers? Looks like pretty much half the league are in the Shane Doan sweepstakes. Where would he be best served going?

Arizona Republic: Opponents of Phoenix Coyotes deal miss deadline. Will the drama in the desert ever end? Your guess is as good as ours.

ESPN: Wild moves making Minnesota a major NHL market. St. Paul, Minnesota will be a place to be seen next season as the return to relevance continues courtesy of these major signings.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, July 11th Jets and General NHL news

Note: Tune into Hustler & Lawless on TSN Radio 1290 from 4-6 pm as ICDrew takes over hosting duties.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Noel likes what he sees at development camp. Coach Noel is sitting back and observing the young, future recruits.

TSN: Tim Stapleton inks deal with KHL team. He just tweeted that he is going to miss Winnipeg. Interesting to note he wrote “wanted to be back?”.

Winnipeg Free Press: Trouba’s a wee one in a family of big folks. A lot of hope rests on his young shoulders. Of course he should be quite the prize after he has the opportunity to mature his game in college.

Winnipeg Free Press: Spending time in Winnipeg fuels Gregoire’s passion to become a Jet. Playing for your re-born hometown team has to have special meaning for a player. That and the hefty raise you would receive playing in the NHL ($925,000.00 ) vs. AHL ($70,000.00).

Winnipeg Sun: Bigger is better, says Jets’ Bogosian. Now that he has had a year to get acclimatized to the city, it is time for him to show fans his true potential next season.

Winnipeg Sun: Prospect of playing for Jets thrills Gregoire. He is bigger and more polished than he was at this time last year and that can only be a good thing for the local kid.

Winnipeg Sun: Undrafted players hoping for shot with Jets. Everyone likes to cheer on the longshots, and there are a number of those at development camp right now.

NHL news:

TSN: Six NHL teams on Nash’s list; none are Canadian. Rick Nash says “I don’t think so Canada”.

Washington Post: Olie Kolzig sounds off about NHL labor situations. Good to hear Kolzig unafraid to speak his mind.

CBC: Former Habs GM Gauthier to work with Blackhawks. I wonder if speaking french is a requirement in Chicago?

The Province: Shane Doan holding out hope for Coyotes. Even at 35, and 36 in October, he could be a great piece of the puzzle for the Canucks. Some serious grit to that roster.
