Is getting an engagement ring with a sapphire considered bad form?

Aren't most sapphires now just synthetic?

I mean it is still a $3200 ring, but there were a lot of rings well over 5 grand, and one at 56 grand.
You're a single guy looking around jewelery stores and asking on the internet about engagement rings? That's insane. Suddenly the Roman Helmet and onion ring suggestions not only seem appropriate, they're by far the most helpful responses for you.

Its not like I'm looking to get married, it was just a question. I'm just asking a question about something I don't know much about. Don't see the harm in that.

I don't think it's bad form, it looks nice.

Do you not know the tastes of your potential fiance, or what?

Anyone who expects you to spend the price of a moderately used car on a freaking ring probably isn't worth it anyways. Personally, I'm not a fan of gaudy jewelry, so it depends on taste, and to me, a ring that costs thousands of bucks screams "I'm horrible with finances and like to piss money down the drain"

Unless you absolutely know she would prefer the sapphire get her the diamond.

Depends if she prefers blue/sapphires over a diamond. In certain cultures a ruby, which can be as expensive as a diamond, is preferred due to the significance of the color etc.

It all depends on the girl, for what it's worth the ring you posted costs twice as much as the diamond ring I bought my wife. For some women the ring is more of a status symbol than anything else, if your future wife isn't a huge pain in the ass she'll be happy with whatever you buy her, aslong as you put effort into it.

While not a traditional engagement ring, I gave my fiance this:

It's black onyx in sterling silver and has 39 little white topaz stones surrounding it. Is it a "traditional" engagement ring? Nope. Are we worried about that??? Not at all. We like being unique. Bottom line is she absolutely LOVES both the ring and (most importantly) me to pieces. I could have gone the diamond and more expensive route (and wanted to and she knows that) but my fiance isn't like that at all. She much prefers just simplistic black onyx and sterling silver kinds of jewelery usually.

Plus as a sweet little bonus she got me a ring too. It's 10K white gold with black onyx as well with two diamond accents (one representing me..one representing her) and looks very very very nice.

While it might not be "normal" or "traditional" for us guys to wear engagement rings, I view the ring that she gave me as an engagement ring and I proudly wear it always. Although we both know that most importantly our love, bond and friendship transcends any physical object. Which is how it should be.

I thought the age old standard was 2-3 months salary for a ring.
