This Visnovsky situation is weird ... as I was leaving work, I saw stuff on Twitter with Bill Daly confirming the Russian league had promised to honor all contracts with the NHL, and they would not allow signed NHL players to remain in the KHL after the lockout ended.

Obviously, that would mean Visnovsky didn't have to come to Long Island, but the Russians wouldn't allow him to play either.

As I sit down, Bobbie Mac is again talking about the Russian teams offering major incentives to not leave the KHL.

Ehhh ... I guess you just have to stop looking for logic.

Regardless, I don't like what Radulov did to Nashville, but I don't think this situation is similar. The owners chose to lock these guys out, and they had to go find work elsewhere.

I hope they come back, but I don't blame them if they don't.

LeBrun's article touches on two parts of the CBA that are just being revealed today.

You know ... I thought I was going to really like the negotiating period for UFAs, but when I read about it now it makes me think all the fun and anticipation of July 1st will be gone.

The period will start the day after the draft, and it will end on June 30th. LeBrun pointed out this likely eliminates the waiting games of past with Kovy and Parise/Suter. Basically we'll wake up on the 1st to a flurry of paperwork to make signings official. I don't follow basketball, but I always hear guys are signing somewhere during the negotiating period, and the actual signing is just a formality. I guess that's what this is going to be.

The thing I'm most interesting is what some media members are now referring to as the Roberto Luongo Rule.

Quote:
To wit: letís say the Canucks trade Luongo soon. Luongo has played two years of his 12-year contract, the Canucks paying him $16.716 million in salary but only absorbing a $5.33 million cap hit each year. Thatís a cap savings of $6.056 million over two years so far for Vancouver. Under this new rule, should the Canucks trade him now and he retires with three years left on his contract, Vancouver would be charged that $6.056 million in cap savings over the final three years left on his deal from 2019 to 2022. However, letís say for argumentís sake Luongo gets traded to Toronto, the Maple Leafs also would be subject to cap penalties if Luongo retires before the end of his deal.

To wit, part 2: If Luongo were to play the next seven years of his deal in Toronto before retiring, the Leafs would be paying him $43.666 million in salary but only counting $37.31 million against the cap over those seven years, a cap savings of $6.356 million. So if Luongo retires with three years left on his deal (because his salary falls to $1.618 million in the 10th year and then $1 million in the last two years of the deal), the Leafs would get charged that $6.356 million on their cap spread evenly over the remaining three years of his deal.

And obviously, if players under these back-diving deals are never traded, but retire before the end of their deals (Marian Hossa in Chicago), their current teams get charged the cap savings spread evenly over the remaining years of the deal.
This makes the Luongo trade situation pretty fascinating. You could buy him out this summer meaning you lose him for nothing, but you avoid this scenario that in all likelihood will happen. There's no way this guy plays the full contract. Tough, Tough decisions coming for the Nucks.

Technically yes he should have to return, but I have no doubt the Russian teams have no issue looking past that.

There were reports earlier that some teams are offering an incentive for their NHL players to not leave Russia.
Makes even less sense now..

@dchesnokov The KHL also confirmed they stay by/honor their agreement with the NHL (respecting each other's contracts).

Hearing from sources via Twitter that the Stars should open at home on the 19th, hearing Phoenix as possible opponent but nothing confirmed

I have that weekend off, so I hope it is true!

It's as if they legit forgot that Dallas had an NHL team.

Y'know, because the Cowboys have been so great lately by comparison.

Not bad! Shame they don't get a full season out of that, looks pretty sharp.

Technically, it's 20 years since coming to Dallas, so they should keep it until the end of the 2013.

This is only our 19th season in Dallas though, considering we lost a year.

Glad they didn't use roman numerals like the Sharks.

Believe Tampa does bolts on their red line as well.

Edit: Also St. Louis...

I think a lot of teams actually do it now to be honest. The Stars were one of the firsts though.

Looks terrible in the Habs' case. Needs to be an abstract symbol.

Gonna probably end up going to the home opener. Know I'm not supposed to but my mom's going regardless, and I'm not gonna miss an opportunity to see the Stars.

Might not be able to get back up there this year either with as busy as we are. But I'm glad I'm getting to go regardless of what game it is.

On how Brenden Morrow looks after getting healthy in an extended off-season:

“It’s so refreshing to see him out here. He looks lean to me, he looks like he’s got that smile back on his face. He’s gone through some tough times, injury-wise, but he’s my captain and he’s bled a lot for this organization, and I think the way it’s set up for him now is going to be a big help for him.”
Didn't we hear the same thing last year? And the year before that?
