Maybe the name Matsumoto is Finnish?

The amount of similarities between Japanese and Finnish names/words is crazy.

Some facts regarding Jonathan matsumoto's heritage: Great-grandparents emigrated from japan early 20th century thus 1st generation Canadian, his grandparents born in Canada were 2nd generation, his father is 3rd generation and married to a Canadian woman of anglo-saxon heritage. Thus Jonathan is Canadian! He is engaged to an American women of Irish heritage.

Regarding his career: He has been twice nominated an AHL All-Star. First time he won the shot accuracy contest but had to decline in 2010, needing the break to move to San Antonio where he had just been traded. Matsumoto was the AHL's first round leading scorer; the Rampage got to the second round for the first time. However, doing well in the AHL does not mean he's a lifer there.

For an NHL rookie given typically minimal 4th line ice time, 2 goals in 13 games is quite respectable. Since then new techniques have improved his faceoff win percentage. Intense on/off-ice training made old reports that were critical of his NCAA speed and defensive skills obsolete some time ago. Matsumoto has always been a smart team player, especially good at setting up scoring plays. He turned down Florida's offer because San Jose's was better. And if SA is smart, they'll use their new asset to create a productive 2nd or 3rd scoring line.

Just curious for general knowledge here, but I thought people born in the country were typically called 1st generation whatever?

There's actually some disagreement on the terminology, but generally first-generation means foreign-born. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigrant_generations

Ah, yeah I had a feeling there was some ambiguity with the terminology. I typically go by their 2nd definition so I got confused.

Sorry for derailing the topic even further, but I noticed wikipedia classifies them as "First generation immigrant." Is it just semantics, or is "first generation American" different? My elementary school teachers referred to people (whose parents weren't born here but they were) by the latter, which could be a cause of all the confusion. "First generation immigrant" makes more sense with your definition, and "first generation American" makes more sense with mine.
