Quite a deal for the Avs. To put it in perspective, EJ is getting paid barely more than Souray and Allen for similar term. EJ should fire his agent after this deal.

This one. A player's ability is not defined by how much money they get in a contract. I'm perfectly happy with EJ being our #1 defenseman and getting paid this much. It shows that he wants to stay with the team, and (seemingly) has a reasonable opinion of himself and how to help the team by not wanting an absurd salary. Wonderful.

So you're using his contract to determine if he's a #1 Dman or not? How about you look at his numbers first:

-1st among Avalanche D in TOI/G
-2nd among Avalanche D in PPTOI/G
-1st in points among Avalanche D
-Faced the toughest competition among Avalanche D

He's obviously Colorado's #1 guy, and IMO his contract is a very good deal for them.

There is no direct correlation between playing level and contract price. This is a multivariant system with some illogical facets. If there was a simple linear correlation like you believe, then Brian Campbell is the second best defenseman in the league and Scott Gomez is a top line player on every team.

I'm speechless, truly. EJ could have been paid one million per year above this and I wouldn't have been bothered in the slightest.

What a contract.

Take a look at Ryan Suter's last contract...4 years 14 million.

Or take a look at Brent Seabrook's contract before his most recent one

http://capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=256

Seriously, at this point, it seems like you have a personal vendetta against EJ.

EJ seems like the type who's extremely loyal. Show him a little love and he'll go through the wall for you.

Love EJ, so happy to have him.

What a genius sherman! I. Was expecting something like 4.75 mil per. Hopefully this is a sign that were trying to get another top pairing dman to play with EJ

It was actually 08. The cap was 20 million less, he still got .75 more, and he did not give up UFA years. Fairly substantial difference if you ask me. He also was not yet the player he is today scoring only 20 points in 54 games.

I can't believe the Avs are paying, by far their best defencemen, this much. Sherman getting ripped off again. Shoulda signed Wideman, he can log more minutes, score more points and earn more money. Avs woulda been so much better off...

That wasn't my point. EJ signed a contract as an RFA while Wideman signed his contract as a UFA. Of course there is going to be a difference in salary.

Thats not recent the cap has gone up substantially, as in 20 million. Ryan Suter was coming off of his 3rd NHL season, scoring only 31 points. He was not the Ryan Suter of today. Again he did not give up UFA years iirc.

Brent Seabrook was coming off a 32 point season, the cap was 20 million dollars lower and he did not give up UFA years. Again big difference. Seabrook was also not yet a #1 defenseman, if he even is now (its debatable).

I don't like the Avalanche. They are a division rival, and I still remember them owning everyone ten years ago. So let me say, there is no bias in this post whatsoever.

Everyone who is saying this is a bad contract needs to take a step back into reality. While he may not be the ideal #1 d-man, I want everyone to go and look at what some other d-men have signed for recently. And then compare them to Erik Johnson. Is a 2 million + Hal Gill, or 3.75 million Erik Johnson a better deal? This is a great deal for the Aves. They have locked up someone who fits well with their team for dirt cheap.

It's fine to have that kind of information, it's actually INFORMATIVE but it's not the be-all-end-all of everything. If it WAS, St-Louis Blues fans would be EXTREMELY UPSET with Kevin Shattenkirk because he was THE KING of SHELTERED MINUTES on that thing before last season. It's interesting but doesn't tell the whole story.

Yeah, almost all the teams are LINING UP TO SIGN a guy that's was just paid $3.5M over the last 4 years. Ryan Suter. Just stop, you're making a complete fool out of yourself.
