Heatley, Setogouchi, Gilbert. Those 3 players are suck the life out of teams. I have my doubts Koivu is the 80 point player he is supposed to be. Bouchard doesn't even count because he's so horrible he will likely be bought out. You have a bunch of borderline talent and an aging goaltender after that. So the Wild right now are Parise, Koivu and Suter.
Let me ask you this, if I asked you before today's signings if the Wild had the ability to finish last in the league next year would it have been possible? You guys think Parise and Suter are THAT good that this is a "contender"?
...but, including NY, now more likely to add via trades....
Free agents are acquired via money, trading for players requires sacrificing prospects and players of your own. I'd rather the competition do the latter

You mean the rumored trades that may or may not happen, and certainly haven't happened yet? And let's not totally forget about the Yandle to Detroit and Nash to SJ possibilities.

....and forcing the Sabres to keep up with stiffer competition.
The Sabres are always competing with stiff competition on the trade/FA market. This doesn't change anything as far as I'm concerned.
He is cheaper and just as good as Nash so theres got to be good, young talent out there that he can get. Detroit, Pittsburg, Philly, New Jersay, Carolina, NYR, Chicago all just struck out on Parise and may still want a proven 30-40 goal scorer.

do you think that Phoenix 2011-12 roster was significantly better then the current Minny roster?
what about the 2011-12 devils? Panthers?

And how do you plan on filling the gaping hole on the Sabres? Please tell me.

We don't have any 1st line wingers to spare, and we're not like Columbus with no hope but a rebuild ahead. We also have a full roster, so dealing one for several doesn't work, unless it's for just a winger and center.
Vanek also won't demand what Nash will in the trade market.

I think you'd be surprised. He won't get quite as much, but I'm sure he'd be viewed as a nice consolation prize for whatever team swings and misses on Nash/Ryan.

Sure other teams would want him, but he still wouldn't demand what Nash would, and we still aren't in a sensible position to trade him anyway.
I thought these signings would have been flood gates. Seems like things are still slow.
I'm amazed how many people thought there'd be signings like an hour later. The other players are going to wait to hear all the offers from the teams that missed out on Parise/Suter, and then decide. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the day was fairly quiet, or, alternatively, doesn't open up until the evening.
Now we get to wait 2-3 days while next wave makes up their minds.
At least they get a few hours to mull over their options, right?
Maybe Matt Carle figured Suter was headed to Detroit so the Red Wings weren't even on his radar. Maybe Semin thought the Penguins or Flyers would get one and thus be more attractive as a destination. Who knows. Plus those teams now need to reassess how much they are willing to throw at the next wave, whether they need to increase an existing offer or whatnot. Maybe they need to double down into trade negotiations.
I'm sure something will happen in the next 24-48 hours.

Based on the reports of what CBJ wanted from NYR for Nash, and what NYR was offering, Dubi was the only the piece that matched up in both offers. The Rags would be idiots to move him if they have any intention of acquiring Nash without giving up Kreider, Erixon, et al.
