I would imagine they would be looking at UFAs as well before they give up assets for a dman.

I know Holland is a great GM, and the Wings are the model franchise but would anyone really be all that surprised if they start falling off in the next few years especially if they don't land one or both of the big fish today? I'll admit I don't know much about their prospect pool, but it doesn't seem like they've had a young star or impact player come up through their system in quite some time. I know majority of their roster is home grown but their best players are all older guys like Franzen, Datsyuk, Zetterberg etc. They've already lost Lidstrom and their best remaining dman in Kronwall isn't exactly young. Lidstrom, Datysuk, and Zetterberg are not going to be easy to replace and I wouldn't be surprised if you see the Red Wings fall off in the next few years when the other two join Lidstrom in retirement.

Carle or Yandle could be the next target:

Quote:
MLIVE.COM/DETROIT FREE PRESS: The Red Wings are interested in both players, but Suter may be of more importance, having offered him a 13-year, $90 million contract. If they fail to sign Parise, they’re expected to pursue Phoenix’s Shane Doan, but reportedly have little interest in Alexander Semin. If they fail to land Suter, they could try to pursue a trade for Phoenix’s Keith Yandle, or perhaps attempt to sign Philadelphia’s Matt Carle
http://spectorshockey.net/blog/lates...r-july-4-2012/

Considering how the Red Wings relied on Lidstrom to fuel their transition game, I think Yandle would be the better fit - but what Detroit has to offer to Phoenix is a mystery.

Has there been talk about why Yandle is even available? It seems odd that the Yotes would part with him.

I agree. But after Carle and Suter, I don't think you can make the argument that there are any top-3 defensemen on the market. Rozsival and Kubina would be solid 4/5 stopgaps. If Suter chooses Minnesota, and Carle either re-signs with Philly or doesn't sign with Detroit, the Wings could be in a little bit of a crunch on the blueline.

I have a real hard time picturing the Wings failing to get Suter. The only thing holding this up is probably the Wings offering less money than other teams.

I would love this for two reasons

1) The epic trolling of Detroit, Philly, and Pittsburgh fans
2) Western Conference, **** yeah

Parise and Suter would increase the number of players I know on Minnesota from 2 to 4. And the other two are goalies. That says all you need to know about THAT franchise...

But do I care that both are going there? Nope. I think it's cool.

Phew. I was worried there was going to be a Cup presentation later this week if he went to the Pens.

So if Minny gets both ....... Do they need to shed salary?

Maybe Clutterbuck becomes available....

Kaleta, Ott and Clutterbuck would be awesome.

So if you don't know players on a team the team is bad? That's pretty arrogant.

No, I'm saying they have always played a boring style that isn't exactly conducive to a fan who doesn't watch much WC hockey. Therefore I'm not familar with individual players.

Clutterbuck would fill a void in 3rd line RW.

Brodziak and Clutterbuck for Sekera + ?

This is super lame.....I would have tried to make a play for Suter then trade Leopold and or Sekera to free a bit of cap back. Parise as well... This has been kind of a slowish nightmare start. We gained toughness but lost offense...
