Say what you will about DW...at least he hasn't handicapped the franchise with these moronic contracts that seem to be the norm in getting big time free agents.

Who would've thought the Islanders would be trend-setters with the DiPietro contract? I remember reading rumors about it a few months before it happened and laughing.

What's interesting about the Parise and Suter contracts is that they both drop off sharply in the final years to bring the cap number down.

The NHL has vowed to close that loophole, and warned teams that the transition rules would be harsh, but 14 teams have at least one of them

Good!

What was the breakdown of Kovalchuk's contract that deemed it cap circumventing? I thought it was really similar to that.

They should, it's pretty obvious it's a 10 year contract with added years to lower the cap.

I remember during the season and I was joking that Minnesota can sign Suter and Parise and Heatley and Seto would make it farther in the playoffs than the Sharks. It actually happened...

From what I remember, the league didn't have a problem with the numbers per se, but that it took him to the age of 44 I believe.

But I agree, that drop off from 6m to 2m would raise a red flag to me if I'm a league official.

It's sad to miss out on the big name UFAs each year, but I'm glad we don't get stuck with some of these contracts. Goodluck to Minny, I hope they can afford to pay them.

Though I was doing it partially in spite of everyone saying "80% Suter goes to Detroit." I'm glad both of them chose the better destination. Minnesota, while being a good hockey market, is still pretty low key compared to Detroit. Parise's in-laws are in the area. And unlike Detroit, Minnesota has a better future. They have great forward prospects; now if they could only shore up their D...

As for the actual deals. Suter seems like a defenseman who will be worth his value throughout the contract. His type of style doesn't really wear down as a player ages. Parise on the other-hand. Not sure his body can last that long (at elite form) with his tenacious forecheck and playstyle.

Had a few people ask about legitimacy of those two deals because contract drops by more than 50 per cent from Year 10 to 11 ($6M to $2M)...

otte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC
That CBA article (known as the 100 per cent rule) is tied into the first two seasons of a contract. Because Suter/Parise will make $12M...

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC
In seasons 1 and 2, the max drop can be $6M from year to year. So there are no issues on the back end.

No kidding. They tried to fix a loophole, but ended up just creating another one. The way the $ amount drops in Suter, Parise, Richards, Bryzgalov, and Ehrhoff's contracts is ridiculous.

If I were a player, I would prefer the money evenly over the term of the contract instead of the bigger amount early. They players are taxing themselves more by taking big lump sums early.

Eh, with a front-loaded contract, you could invest large amounts now and not worry about how much you'll really be getting in the future (inflation and such).

You can make money on the money to make up for that and what if they get hurt or even die. Where does that leave the family. Just like the lotto, you take the money not the structured payout.

They're in the highest tax bracket regardless.

Taxes will probably be higher in the future anyways. So by getting the money now, they taking advantage of today's lower tax rates.
