Ottawa is just not that attractive of a market for most free agents. Last few guys they've signed have been old and overpaid (Gonchar, Kovalev), or want to be closer to Montreal (again Kovalev, Latendresse). The rest have been lower tiered guys who saw their best chance to get playing time on the team.

Want a big name guy, find someone who doesn't have a NTC and go get him, I'd be willing to bet that unless they're from the Ottawa area, Ottawa isn't on their trade list. My opinion.
Makes you wonder why Murray passed on Boyle years ago, he wanted to come here, but Murray decided to go with Kuba/Picard/pick instead?

Ottawa might not be the destination of choice for unrestricted free agents, but at least we are able to retain our impending UFAs. I can't think of a player who wanted to leave the city after playing here (except the graet all star).

Yes, because after the owner AND GM come out and say they have no interest, the next logical step is to assume the complete opposite.

Wow they both sign in Minny. Yeah we all saw that one coming. I'm looking for all the fools making comments like "as expected".

People always forget that these guys generally marry prima donna princesses that want to either be living in luxurious or high profile areas. Most guys (especially married) have their gonads in a vice by their naggy wives

Nope. We're not on his list and Murray said we weren't going to pursue it anymore.

It's the equivalent of saying "Parise will sign in Ottawa by the end of today"

The facts are there, you're just ignoring them completely.

Corvo, Preissing and Commodore all wanted to leave.

Didn't know Minnesota is considered luxurious or high profile.

Thank goodness it's in the west. Good for Minny.

Also, Ottawa HAS to be at least as desirable a location as Minneapolis. At least, you know, if you're from around there.

Yup. Now we just have to find two friends who are really good and UFA's at the same time, who have some connection to the area, and throw 13 years at 7.5 at them. Profit.

Corvo - destroyed by the media
Preissing - left for money I think?
Commodore - did Murray make fun of his hockey skills? I can't remember

What I mean is it's not like Nashville/Atlanta/Florida where once a star players nears free agency, they are certain to leave and are traded. Hossa/Chara/Cashin/Havlat all would have played here but money wasn't enough or they were just traded.

Parise signing is another one of those that makes Spezza's contract look more like a bargain.

Spezza > Nash > Parise. And Giggles makes less than both.

(open appreciation of Spezza)
(thinly veiled appreciation of Bryan Murray after the craziness around the Foligno trade)

Ottawa won't be a top destination for UFA's until they've re-established themselves as a top tier team. Right now the Sens are a young group of players with lots of potential but that still have some future unknowns. Not many elite players who are itching for a Cup are going to want to play in that kind of market.

Preissing: , though 'twas not the biggest loss, in retrospect.

I wonder if Detroit will get in seriously on Nash now, since Minny and the west are loading up. I'd figure they'd prefer Nash to Semin. Wonder if they anything to offer? They do actually have some attractive older players CLB might be interested in.

I think Preissing wanted out after getting scratched in the play-offs, no?

That's a hard bunch to compare. Parise has a work ethic and on-ice hustle that is next level and better than what i've seen from Spezza, and Nash has been putting up points as a one man show in Columbus.

I have a hard time believing that we wouldn't take Nash if he amended his list to include Ottawa.

Perhaps. My memory of Preissing leaving is hazy. I assumed at the time he just wanted more money than we were prepared to give him and left because of that, didn't know he wanted out of Ottawa specifically.
