Which would you rather in 2012/2013

Leafs qualify for the playoffs (low seed), lose the series in less than 6 games.

Leafs finish dead last, draft Mackinnon 1st overall.

If those are the options, Mackinnon by a longshot.

Maybe I should have changed option 1 to lose in 2nd round.

Being that Burke screwed everything up, and we've now only completed year 1 of a legitimate rebuild, bottoming out isn't just the better solution. It's the only solution.

I'd love some playoff action, but Mackinnon is going to be sick. I can't wait to watch him play this season. Grabbing that 15 game pack for the Mooseheads.

Wouldn't matter, given the choice of Mackinnon or losing in the playoffs, it's a no brainer to choose Mackinnon.

With the promise of the fresh start of a new season, I will be the first to go against the grain here and say playoffs, hands down. This team needs more character, and less of a terrible losing attitude. How do you get that? You make the playoffs. Every single player on our team will be better by us making the playoffs. The experience is invaluable for the entire roster (especially the kids and goaltenders, though), it shows those big 2013 UFA's that we're making huge strides in the turn-around of our franchise, and it means Burke will be extended, which I want to see.

For me, right now, one or two playoff rounds, a better chance at Getzlaf, and Burke getting extended outweighs drafting MacKinnon.

Losing is still losing, playoffs or not. I think Mackinnon is the obvious answer, but I do not think we are a bad enough team to fall to last.

The other big forward names are:

Taylor Cammarata who is still only 5'6" and committed to college
Adam Erne who is not a centre
Hudson Fasching who is a power forward and also committed to college
J.T. Compher looks promising but I am not sure if he is a center and he is committed to college

Unless a potential #1C prospects pops up this year, other then MacKinnon, I prey we win as much as possible.

Going to be pretty hard to finish dead last. I say we're going to be a mid-pack team , 15th maybe ?

Finishing last doesn't guarantee the first overall pick.

Yeah, but when does the 30th place team not win the draft lottery?

(there)

A number one centreman would be ideal for this team in its present form.

I'm not sure why anyone would kid themselves that playoffs are a realistic goal.

These options don't really make sense. I'd rather make the playoffs and see what happens. If you're guaranteed to lose in six games then maybe draft Nathan.

I don't know. It's tough.

Why would you want the Leafs to finish last overall? It's embarrassing. Especially for a hockey meca like the Leafs. I just want to see them play and battle hard. Would like to see them make the playoffs but if we have some good goaltending and play as a team that's good for me. No more meltdowns!!!!! Having a bad losing month kills us every year. The last two years have been like that.

Oh you're not sure? Alright, let me explain it.

The Leafs are one of the youngest teams in the league, and thus, it is reasonable to expect individual progress in the majority of the players. The team showed that we can hang with the best of 'em (except Boston last season ) but the team was outrageously inconsistent- which is a classic characteristic of YOUNG players. We were in a playoff spot for ~2/3 of last season. A key player in Kulemin had an extremely off year; no I don't expect him to be a 30 goal scorer again but his entire game was off. Our moves so far this offseason have produced:

Out: Our slowest defenceman (who can still be a good player) who had an absolutely terrible season. Will likely be replaced with either Holzer, or via trade (example target: Douglas Murray).

In: -A BIG winger with a ****-ton of potential. Works the boards well.
- A shutdown center, who is a PK specialist. Exactly what we need.

Keep in mind, the offseason has just begun. Expect more.

Have any more questions? I'll be glad to answer them for you!

The 30th team has only won the lottery 6 times out of 16 (which is actually better than the odds 37.5% vs 25%).

It has kept the first pick 3 other times because the team that won had finished higher than 5th last.

Finally, in 1998, Tampa Bay lost the lottery but had the right, following a trade, to swap their first round pick with the team that won the lottery (San Jose) and exerciced that right.

Drafting Mackinnon, but honestly way to many variables.

You do realise for us to be in last all our young players would have to regress ? If our team is so bad as to finnish last we will need numerous last place finishes to fix the problems, but that isn't the case.

Since I like our team and want to see our guys do well I will say playoff.

Playoffs would make us more attractive for some UFAs, and it's a big UFA year. Plus even one round of playoffs could provide valuable experience for our players, great experience.
