Could Al Montoya be our Mike Smith?

I think Burke should roll the dice on Montoya. Former first round pick who's played admirably in spurts. Injuries have kind of set him back. He definitely has the talent and the size to be a starting goalie. Now all that's missing is the consistency. He would come here with low expectations. Probably would start off as Reimer's backup, and I think he could eventually thrive. Montoya's got good puckhandling skills too something our goalies have lacked since the days of Belfour.

My name is Mike Smith, so I'm sure Al Montoya could be as good, if not better than me.

But I want him nowhere near this team.

Toronto is not the place for goalies to come a unlock their potential.

Nobody will ever become the next Mike Smith in my opinion because nobody plays defensive hockey like Phoenix does.

I'd try him on a one-year deal. He's not much older than Scrivens, but does have more NHL experience, and does have a very high draft pedigree. With goaltending being a very psychological position, we've seen how they can tend to develop later, and Montoya could be a case of that. Another fresh start could be good for him.

However, I would only go that route if Leafs management wanted to keep Scrivens in the minors one more year.

Maybe if we steal Dave Tippett and Sean Burke

No I would rather give backup role to Scrivens.

Definitely. We have young goalies with potential if that's the route our goaltending is going to take.

Reimer has as much chance at being our Mike Smith as Montoya.
(BTW Montoya had a mid season concussion).

Couldn't hurt bringing him in on a low cost/low term deal.

No, the leafs will not be able to play the same defensive style of the Phoenix Coyotes. Dale Tippet style of coaching based solely on defence. Mike Smith while playing good greatly benefited from playing behind that Phoenix defence.
Al Montoya I see as a last ditch effort for goal tenders if we lose out on Loungo, Bernier or who ever else Burke has tried to get. I could see us signing Montoya to a cheap on year contract.

Leafs will not bring in Montoya. Burke said he's not interested in bringing in another unproven goalie.

There is no such thing as coming into Toronto with low expectations.

Nope, we aren't a team without goalie depth, we're a team without an experienced #1 goalie. Al Montoya is a good match for the former, not the latter.

I feel like Belfour was not that great of a puckhandler when he was here.

Might've been those handful of times he forgot about the trapezoid that's clouding my memory though.

Ed Belfour is exempt from a conversation where "unproven goalie" and "realizing potential in Toronto" are the main talking points.

Belfour wasn't as acrobatic and dramatic as Joseph, Potvin and Fuhr were, but on his best nights, maybe only two other goalies that I've seen ever gave the impression that they were in as much control.

On his best nights, it was like a sliver of iron was placed inside the pucks, and in the Leaf primary logo, a magnet...When he was on, everything hit him dead center.

What a goalie.

Mike Smith wouldn't be Mike Smith on the Leafs

Hell we could have Lundqvist and turn him into Gustavsson

I doubt it.

What we need to do is nab Nashville's goalie coach.

I would hope our goaltending doesn't depend on a coach....we are in big trouble if it is with Allaire's track record.

Bernier is what we need.
