Loved Manny during his time as a Canuck. Great to see him get that OT winner, wish him nothing but the best with you guys. He was faceoff specialist basically in Van and usually played good shut down role too that I recall.

Manny with no eyes is still a better player than John Scott. That comparison is laughable.

Really happy for the guy, both that he's found a chance to continue his NHL career, and that he seems to be making the most of it. Hopefully the Hurricanes franchise and fans look after him; if there's a list of classier guys to have worn a Canucks' uniform, it's got to be a small list.

Still wish we'd been the ones to give him this shot, though.

Yay Manny! I wish it could have worked out in Vancouver for him, I really do. He seemed to love the team and city, and the team and city definitely loved him.

I'm happy for him, but I can't say I'm not worried for his health though if his vision hasn't improved enough to be considered 'safe to play'.

"Fanner" Glass seems to have turned a page with the Penguins. 19 GP, 2G, 3A and 2nd in the league in Hits with 79, only behind Matt Martin. Also #4 in blocked shots by forwards. Good to see him doing well.

Penguins fans legit hate the guy. Like waaaay more than we did.

Also, if we can let the weird Grabner narrative die:

Isles appear to be getting a little frustrated with the enigmatic speedster.

This line made me laugh though:

Quote:
At 26 he should be just entering his prime years. At various times this writer has suggested it might be in everyone’s best interests to move him to another team, perhaps in the more free-flowing Western Conference, where his speed and skill might have a chance to shine more brightly than in the closer-checking East.
Ha ha, idiotic.

The guy who wrote that article looks like Mankind from the WWF.

Only in Atlantic Canada (where it's 11PM local time when most Western games start) do they think the West is more open.

You can love hockey a lot, but I highly doubt guys are staying up until 2am to watch the Coyotes play the Ducks.

Saying the Western Conference is free-flowing is like saying ice is hot...

2 goals in 24 games for Grabner. Now in his 3rd straight season of being a ~30 point player - in other words, worse than Mason Raymond at both ends of the rink.

Are people finally realizing that their outrage might have been somewhat misplaced?

I like Grabner, for the record. But aside from one 40-game stretch three seasons ago, he simply hasn't been a very good NHL player. Definition of a one-trick pony.

__________

Funny thing is that on paper, the Ballard trade doesn't even look that bad. A guy with 2 goals in 24 games whose contract is now nearly as bad as Ballard's was, and a fringe prospect with 3 goals in 19 games in the AHL.

Big error on Ballard continues to be keeping him in the summer of 2011. Gillis let sentimentality get the better of him when he had a year-end meeting with Ballard and Ballard said he wanted to come back and be better. A good attitude is noble, but you can't let your vision be clouded as a GM.

Did we decide to keep Ballard or were there simply no takers?

To me that's always going to be an very interesting and probably always unanswered question.

Were there takers for Ballard and at what cost - would a team have offered something up for a player who was worth a 1st and a prospect a season earlier, would a team have taken him for nothing, would a team have asked for a high draft pick just for taking the contract?

Who knows?

All we know is that we didn't try.

We had management-player meetings a couple days after the Boston series ended. Immediately after those meetings, Gillis talked about what a great attitude Ballard had and how the team was going to keep him for another year and give him another chance.

This was before the draft/offseason, so assuming Gillis held to his word, whether we could trade him wasn't investigated.

At that point, you'd think he would have had a little bit of value. He was worth a 1st + a good prospect the previous offseason. I don't think his value had become negative that quickly. Even if we could only have gotten a mid-round pick for him, it would have meant we could have kept Ehrhoff.

Roussel fights Shaw and scores the GW against the Hawks. Should have been offered a contract by the Canucks but for the 50 limit.

Yeah I'll take your word for it, as I don't specifically remember that part. Hard to think he wouldn't have at least some sort of a bounce-back year if they did keep him, but it didn't even happen. Wonder if they explored the possibility of moving him at the 2012 deadline.

If we're talking about players we would have offered contracts to but couldn't, I'd be much more sad about Matt Fraser.

MS, I've been meaning to say something about this for a while about the Rome vs Ballard thing that happened here. I understand your viewpoint in that the overpaid, non performing player was favored over the cheaper guy that's paid his dues. The big thing is that people love upside. Prospects are always favored over replacement level players and fourth liners etc.

People saw upside in Ballard, that Rome never could touch, and I think that's what drew a lot of people (including myself) onto "his side".

Sad story about Gino Odjick.

He has people who care about him, so I hope he gets the support and help he needs.

Both would have been great to have. If only the NHL wasn't to strict about contract limits, but I guess the only way around it is buyouts or to move a player via waivers/trade which is risky since both of those players weren't considered to have a lot of upside when the Canucks had the chance

Yeah, hope he's alright. I imagine this might play into the lawsuit going on right now as well.

We were hampered by some deadweight contracts at the time that were used up on some nothing prospects like Rai, Tochkin and Schneider etc. So it doubly sucks.

4 goals and 5 assists in the 17 games since vanek was traded.

1 goal and 2 assists in the 9 games since ted nolan was hired.

how long until nolan pummels cody with his bare fists?

Nolan would have to go through Cody's Mom first.

Not quite the gimmie you'd think it was.
