Regardless, Phoenix and Nashville both are getting worse, and I'd expect at least one of them to drop out of playoff contention now. Think that the Wild got just enough better to get in.

Heatley also makes 7.5, so that is 22.5mil tied up with 3 players. The Wild are definitely going to be a playoff team, but I still think the Canucks will take the division. Minny needs to improve their defense and they need to hope their goalies, Koivu, and others don't get injured.

Congratulation Wild fans. Hope there is Gary Bettman on your home ice presenting the cup to Koivu pretty soon.

Minny has great fans and it's great to see a real hockey market win with UFAs.

Not to mention a team that's generally been one of the have-nots.

Great news. Looking forward to the battles next season.
Aren't all cities with a NHL team a real hockey market?

Two things that justify the means...when snazzy said this and when russotrib tweeted Parise's uniform number "if" he signs with the Wild.

Never underestimate the wives.

Here's to the beautiful women of Minnesota, and the hockey players they attract.

But how would Heatley know? RT @DarrenDreger Heatley spoke with Suter and swapped texts with Parise. Both asked: can we win. Answer: yes.

Hm. Damn, I wish I had a comeback for that. If only the mentioned 5 Stanley Cup appearances included one in 2012.

RT @TIOPS_DePaoli: Can confirm Parise decision came down to Min and New Jersey. If Suter were to pick Detroit, he was headed back to Jersey

I really wonder why Suter didnt sign in Detroit. It seemed like such a good fit.

I like the way it actually played out better, though.

With the development of Henrique and Zajac presumably coming back for a ful season at C, that still leaves the Devils with two of the top 10 scorers in the NHL this past season on the LW.
But if you are signing a long term deal like Kovalchuk did and you look at the make-up of both teams at the time, it was clear to everyone that LA had a brighter future. Look beyond the roster to ownership and you'll see LA was in a much more stable position at the time.

Me saying they are Atlanta is hyperbolic no doubt, but you get the point. I'm glad he is not here as things obviously worked out. My point at the time of his signing though was that it was for the money as $20MM more is huge. NJ fans disputed this, even resorting to saying "What is $20MM to a guy like Kovy?" Well, it's effing $20MM is what it is!

The guy chose a team with a goalie on his last, albeit amazing, legs and its best forward rumored to leave as far back as that same Summer. Reports came out shortly after the Kovy contract that ownership wouldn't be able to pay Parise because of the amount of real dollars being paid out during the first few years of Kovy's contract. Fast forward two years and here we are.

You mention Elias and hope he doesn't regress...another aging vet. Lots of question marks in NJ right now. At least Parise went West and Pittsburgh weakened their squad for nothing at the moment.

Then I'll be more blunt. He's already on the decline (and he'll be 28 shortly).

Dany Heatley was 30 and a 4-time 40-goal scorer. Is that the player he is today? No.

Chicago, San Jose, and Detroit are still miles better on paper. It's not close. The Wild did the Hawks and the rest of the league a favor by signing Parise.

Flyers still aren't contenders as of now maybe a change in GM could break that 37 year jinx do you think?

Holy **** .. people are actually complaining about 15m/year (about 20% of the current cap) for two of the best 27 year olds in the league ... They are not 35+ .. these deals are fine if they are not front loaded and great if they are.

The Americans signed in the Hockey City of America on July 4th.

If this wasn't planned I don't know what is.
