The Shea Weber thread

OK, we have threads on possible trades for Bobby Ryan and Rick Nash. Time to get one going for Shea Weber. Defense is our biggest need by a large margin and as we just saw you are not guaranteed to get even a sure thing when you are negotiating with 30 other teams. This is part of the reason why I would have preferred using that #1 pick to negotiate exclusively with Ryan Suter rather than blow it on Kyle Quincey.

So what do you think we'd need to send to Nashville to get Weber for this year and signed to a long-term contract? The writing is on the wall for the Preds and I am not sure they'll want to lose another premier defenseman for nothing next summer.

I'd say:

Brendan Smith - they are going to want a high end NHL ready d-man
Xavier Ouellet - one of our top d-man prospects
A 2013 1st and a 2014 2nd round pick

Would that get it done?

Yeah but at best he'll sign a 1 year deal like he did last year and he'll be an UFA next summer.

Sorry, I am not giving up Smith for anyone. I think he's the real deal and will be better than Suter at some point.

Make no mistake we were in perfect position to sign Suter. If Holland acquired his rights prior to Juy 1st I think there's an excellent shot he would have signed with us. Holland has got to be aggressive going after Weber. Weber is a Norris caliber defenseman. We know Holland cannot win a bidding war against 30 other GMs and that's fine. You must know your glaring weaknesses and prevent them from crippling you.

Go out and get Weber before he hits free agency. If he fails this time it's hard to see him surviving as the DRW general manager.

Not even worth discussing, really.

1. He won't be traded here, unless we were to blow up our team completely
2. It's very unlikely Holland would offer-sheet him, it's classless and...
3. Nashville will match ANY offer-sheet, especially with Suter gone.

Our only chance is to hope he signs a 1 year deal and become a UFA next year, and that's only if we don't commit to other players beyond 1 year in free-agency.

Help us, Obi-Wan-Weber. You're our only hope.

Um yeah, and Chris Chelios would never be traded here. If we wait until July 1, 2013 I guarantee you we get outbid for Weber. Guaranteed. Fact.

i don't. it's pretty obvious that parise and suter had been thinking about playing together all this time. you don't just call each other on a whim and suddenly decide you want to play together. he would have just waited untl free agency opened anyways

Nashville would NOT trade Suter's rights. Can't blame Holland for that.

Great. So then Nashville matches and they get him for 13 years. And then if they must, they trade him ANYWHERE but Detroit

I think the only thing Holland can do at this point is offer sheet the hell out of Weber. If he's going to stay in Nashville, make them pay for it.

The Wings don't need their 1st round picks for the next 4 years anyway...

I seriously think the only way to get him is to trade for him. If Ken Holland just makes a note in Outlook on July 1, 2013 at 12pm to contact Shea Weber's agent we're definitely not going to get him. Suter was the guy who is closest to Lidstrom and we lost our shot at him. We will get one more shot with Weber and I hope Holland learned from how this whole thing went down.

We very well may not have been able to trade for Suter but we'll never know for sure because Holland never made an aggressive move to acquire his rights.

Those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it.

He re-signs or gets traded before he even gets a chance to come here.

Even if we offer sheet, Preds match.
