Epitome of the Devils is absolutely correct. Walking out on the team that goes through blood, sweat & tears to make you who you are has become a time honored Devils tradition. Thank god ZP has upheld that tradition

At least in my view, I'm more upset that the C is vacant again. When people say it should've been Kovalchuk, they were looking someone who would still set an example out there with his emotional leadership and not leave the next year.

Zach was a great captain, all the players acknowledged it and anyone who doesn't believe so is just lying to themselves. That being said, in my view, he wiped his ass with it and left. It sucks and will leave a sour taste in our mouths over his tenure here. Not mine, particularly, but most people.

He also devalued our C even further with his grand gestures. Kovy can bring that shine & stability back to the C. That's why it must be Kovy.

Where do you people come up this ****?

His point totals go as so:

32, 62, 65, 94, 82 and 69.

Obviously last year isnt there.

So 32 points in his rookie season, 62 and 65 points before his explosion of 94 and 82 and then 69 points after his knee surgery.

"he was a 60 point or less player for 5 years". One year less than 60 points, when he was a rookie.

You give the C to the guy who deserves it, regardless of his contract status.

It is inevitable. People are pissed off and are going to go back and devalue his accomplishments here. It shouldn't happen, but it does.

The hardest part will be actually cheering for him as captain if the NHL is in the olympics again. Ugh that's gonna be a bitter pill.

I take nothing away from his on-ice play or his accomplishments with the team. I take away a lot of credibility for his facade of a great moral compass off the ice. He was very much scheming all the way back to before his RFA negotiations. This was a breakout Andy Dufresne would have been impressed by.

He said it yesterday, number 9 never mattered to him...and he doesn't care about what happens to it.

I think that says a lot about him.

we absolutely shoudlve kovy the c in hindsight- how could anyone argue this? nobody’s revising history, but in hindsight, giving the C to parise was the wrong move, knowing what we know now. my point is, kovy should be the captain now. its his team

We give players numbers, they don't get the ones they wore.

Our team is founded on the fact that it's what is on the front of the jersey that matters, not the back.

The only tie he has to the #9 is lou giving it to him. Why should he care?

EDIT: People are taking it like he said the devils never matted to him and he doesnt care about what happens to them.

Captain Parise took us to game 6.

Who knows what the room would have been like if Kovy was captain?

NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IT WAS LIKE IN THE ROOM BESIDES THE PLAYERS AND THEY ALL SAY HE WAS AN AMAZING CAPTAIN.

You can't change the beginning and expect the same result.

Which also seems to be untrue, because when he could pick his nuber in the Olympics, he still went with #9. After Madden left, he could have changed his number if he really wanted to, but still kept #9.

On the ice, Parise is the kind of guy any team would love to have. His boardwork and hustle were stupendous. He has no shot outside of 5 feet from the net though, but he isn't crosby.

I would suspect he's a good C too because he seems to be good at spoonfeeding lip service.

But as the details come out about how he schemed the past year, bye bye.

But really, what are the players gonna say? They all praised Langenbrunner, too, but apparently he was a cancer in the locker room. So we may never really know what kind of captain he was.

But with Langs, you could tell something was rotten in that locker room from the outside. This one was very close knit and we all commented on it during the season. Parise was a good captain while he was captain, there's no denying it.

But I have a poor opinion of a captain who walks out on a team he just led to the Cup Final.

I don't remember hearing about how happy everyone was, how close they were and all that when Langs was captain.

Certainly they didn't call him out but I don't feel like they pumped his tires.

Any way to make this thread a poll?

It happened like this...

-Kovy signs for life
-Miss playoffs
-Zach is named captain
-Lose in finals to LA (Kovy almost went there)
-Zach leaves

If Ilya is named captain I just feel that he would be so motivated to lead this team. To prove everybody wrong. To prove the people wrong who said he couldn't lead in Atlanta, to prove the Devils wrong for making Parise captain, to prove to himself that he was right in picking NJ over LA, to prove Parise wrong for leaving the team.

I just get that feeling that he would play with a chip on his shoulder the whole year. Remember 2 years ago when we made that late playoff push and Kovy was just on fire? Going all out and scoring all the big goals at all the right times...game winning goals, overtime goals, shootout goals...ect. That was when I realized that Ilya Kovalchuk needs to be the captain of this team. It means a lot that he signed to be a Devil for life, that is dedication, reward the guy.

Kovalchuk has just as much work ethic as Parise, if not more. For example, his OT goal vs. Toronto.

j.p.? is that you?

I can play that game too- maybe if kovy’s our captain, we win the cup. see?

I appreciate what he’s done, but AGAIN- I’m not saying he was a poor captain. I’m saying I wish we had given it to someone who chose to commit long term and meant it. in fact, with the way this transpired and judging from lou’s quotes, I think its clear that ZP is the one who only wanted a 1 year contract..he and his bff suter wanted to be together.

Just because I'm defending him from the ******** that everyone is saying now, doesn't mean I'm on his side.

I'm furious he left and I am still furious as to how terrible he was in the SCF. I am happy we didn't sign him to that contract as I don't think he will ever live up to it.

But I'm not about to demean everything he was and did during his time as a Devil, simply to make myself feel better about losing him.

When we're farther removed from it, the attempts at revisionism will die down.

I think I’ll let myself out of this conversation- you seem to be confusing me for someone else. I’ve explained I appreciate what he’s done, I’ve explained he was a fine captain, but it doesn’t seem to be sinking in with you- you keep harping on those 2 points. as a final shot, I’ll say it again- we shouldn’t have named him captain. our captain, who led us so far, has signed a megadeal with another team a year after getting the honor. that’s just bad looks, all the way around.

Oh please.

7 seasons. One of which he had 90+. One of which he had 80+. One of which he got hurt. One of which was a rookie year.

In the remaining 3 seasons, he need 30+ goals and 30+ assists. In his 5 real seasons, his career low is 62 and he's great defensively.

Let's not try to make this a case of us losing an overrated nobody. Parise is a great player. He's just not worth that contract.

Every quote the last few days says alot about him. Screw Parise.

Where's that Benedict Gomez guy? I think it's time for a name change

We could have traded his loser ass to Minn for Zidlicky and other assets last year. Instead we get a sour taste or mouths as we were sweet talked to high heaven while getting a swift kick to the sack while he runs off giggling and holding money bags in one hand & his fiancé's, the beautiful Ryan Sutter, arm on the other side.
