Wait until next years free agency

Lets be real here, nothing the Hawks do in free agency from this point forward will make them cup contenders. First of all, you aren't going to win with a Crawford/Emery combo and with Kruger as 2nd line center. Not to mention Hawks 2nd and 3rd pair D is filled with #5 and 6's.

As a result, Hawks should just wait until next years free agency which will be much better than this one. Sign 1 player from 2 of these groups:

Forwards:
Corey Perry
Ryan Getzlaff
Scott Hartnell
Brenden Morrow
Derek Roy
Travis Zajac
Ryan Clowe

Defensemen:
Alexander Edler
Ladislav Smid
Ryan O'Byrne
Marc-Edouard Vlasic
Tobias Enstrom
Rob Scuderi

Goaltenders:
Niklas Backstrom
Kari Lehtonen
Mike Smith

Getzlaff and Lehtonen would make this team instant contenders.

Probably a majority of those players won't be free agents come July 1st of next year, as is almost always the case.

But it doesn't matter. Even before July 1st came and went this year (I guess July 4th is the more important date due to Suter and Parise, but you get my point), the realistic fans saw that if this team was truly going to improve this summer, it'd be through the trade market rather than free agency.

Still plenty of time left to make that happen.

Almost all of those guys will be resigned by the time free agency rolls around. Every year you are going to see a small pool of UFA's that will need to be overpaid to obtain.

Most of those guys will probably be signed by their teams long before next July. As for the Hawks - I'd make a move towards upgrading goaltending at this point.

I'd love to upgrade the goaltending as well, problem is, teams don't give up good goaltenders.

If Anaheim continues to suck Perry and maybe Getzlaf might want out.

Get me two of Lehtonen, Getzlaf, Perry, Vlasic, and Edler and you can color me silver and dress me up as the Stanley Cup.

But they are Anaheim's entire team. They will hugely over pay them to keep them around.

Yep and there's one big reason for them to sign this summer. Long contracts might be abolished in the new CBA. If Perry and Getzlaf are smart, they probably look for 10+ year contracts this summer while they are still available.

Yeah...but if the team looks like it's going to keep right on losing maybe they don't care...they will probably find someone else to overpay them.

most of them won't reach free agency. I don't see it. If you want star players, you have to make them or trade for them.

Agree with common consensus. Majority of these guys will not make it to free agency, and then when they do they will come with an overly hefty price tag. Star players are either bred in your system, or you have to trade for them. It's very hard to sign them in free agency because all teams will be in an expensive bidding war.

Anaheim is falling apart. Here's to them missing the Playoffs and Ryan Getzlaf signing with the Hawks next year.
