Apparently Montoya suffered a concussion after the Kane hit and his numbers plummeted.

I never knew that.

Here's hoping all is cool when he meets Kane again

Montoya looks good some nights, awful some nights and even streaks from period to period some times... You just don't know what you are getting.

The Jets were probably the only team to offer him a one way contract. He still might be in the AHL this season if a better tender shows up on waivers, which is bound to happen in September. He's a good option to have in the mean time if no upgrade opportunity presents itself.
great post. You read my mind

Zinger is probably beaming ear to ear as he may have found a goalie to the lead the Ice Caps to the Calder Cup finals. IF he has a hot streak at the right time.

I was kind of hoping we could get Auld as a veteran backup after Mason left. I'm not sure what Montoya provides exactly and I'm worried what happens if Pavelec gets injured for any stretch of next season.

Is it a 1-way contract?

just listening to the conf call on 1290. I will say one thing about Montoya - he is exceptionally well-spoken. He sounds like he's got exactly the right mindset for the back-up spot too.

We now have the 4th, 5th and 6th overall picks from the 2004 draft on our team:

4th overall: Andrew Ladd (CAR)
5th overall: Blake Wheeler (PHX)
6th overall: Al Montoya (NYR)

Plus we could sign hometowner Cam Barker who was the 3rd overall pick (CHI)

How dare they!

PS: Good signing, hopefully. The risk/reward potential is there.

SG - I agree. Sounds likes he's excited to be coming here and understands that he is the backup.

I like the one year deal. Montoya finally broke out somewhat 2 years ago with a solid year. Maybe he had an off year this past year? One year deal gives him a change to battle for his NHL future.

Also with next years crop of goaltending UFAs we are sure to get another solid tender if Hanna Montoya doesn't work out.

There are sure to be plenty resigned but right now 2013 UFA goalies according to CapGeek looks like this:

Backstrom, Niklas - MIN
Thomas, Tim - BOS
Khabibulin, Nikolia - EDM
Lehtonen, Kari - DAL
Nabokov, Evgeni - NYI
Howard, Jimmy - DET
Smith, Mike - PHX
Theodore, Jose - FLA
Garon, Mathieu - TBL
Giguere, JS - COL
Labarbera, Jason - PHX
Mason, Chris - NSH
Emery, Ray - CHI
Budaj, Peter - MTL
Boucher, Brian - CAR
Leighton, Michael - PHI
Khudobin, Anton - MIN
Thiessen, Brad - PIT
and more that I skipped because they are not full time NHLers

The Big Cubano is not nearly as athletic as he looks like he should be. That's his biggest weakness, IMO. He relies too much on positioning and doesn't battle to find the puck through traffic, he kind of just hopes it hits him. Some days it does.

He's a slim guy with long limbs, he just looks like he'd be a really quick and athletic guy but not so much.

Not really a big fan of this signing. It's low risk (wrt his contract), but I'm afraid it could also prove low reward.

Montoya really strikes me as a goalie with some flaws in his game, and as Le Golie pointed out (he's probably seen more of Montoya than anyone here, I'm guessing), there seems to be some major issues with consistency. Also, I'm fairly certain that in 2010-11 he was starting practically every night, what with the Isles goalies all being hurt. Last season he was getting starts here and there, and his numbers sharply declined. I find that a bit disconcerting, as what the Jets ultimately need is a goalie who can start 15-20 games and be sharp after some inactivity.

Sorta what I've gathered. He also seems pretty pedestrian when it comes to lateral movement. Doesn't explode like a Lundqvist or Quick, just sorta floats through the crease. That can work for some goalies (Craig Anderson comes to mind), but I've seen times where Montoya looks slow at getting himself square to the play.

Can he forgive Kane for running him over?

- Jokingly said he can’t remember. Said he’s happy to have Evander Kane on his team.

Kind of wished they had signed him for a couple of years - he's still young. Just watch him stand on his head when called upon this year - and then be making 5x as much the following year.... (Not that there's anything wrong with that - if he earns it)

Listening to the press conference - I really liked what I heard in regards to his attitude - and wanting to come to Winnipeg. Now I guess we'll see how well he plays. Got a good feeling about Al.

I disagree, a one yeat contract was definity the way to go here. If it doesnt work out, then we can get someone else next year.

I wouldn't worry about that. I don't see his potential to be very high.

If he can suddenly turn into a reliable 15-20 game player who can sit on the bench for two or three weeks and then come out and give us a chance to win, that will be all we can ask and he might carve out a career as a good backup. That won't be easy for him though, looking at his inconsistent body of work.

Let's all hope he can become dependable, that would be fantastic.

Montoya pre-Kane hit:

17 GP (15 starts)
953 MIN
6W - 5L - 3OTL
39 GA
2.46 GAA
470 SA
431 SV
.917 SV%

Montay post-Kane hit:

14 GP (11 starts)
767 MIN
3W - 6L - 2OTL
50 GA
3.91 GAA
362 SA
312 SV
.862 SV%

I would say that is a major drop in play.

Either way it's a bit of a gamble I suppose...

One thing is for sure, Montoya is the only player in free agency to sign a one "yeat" contract

I guess Montoya didn't want to be in Kane's crosshair anymore.

That's what I was thinking.... he'll play much better here knowing that Kane is on the same team
