He was in development camp with us. Believe he had a couple of goals and Leslie was impressed with him.

Jean, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, was among those tagged by the National Hockey League’s Central Scouting Service as a B-rated player back in October in assessing the 2008 NHL Draft-eligible players. That designation indicates a player who is a potential third-to-fifth-round pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft, set for June 21-22 in Ottawa.

“Kyle’s a very highly-regarded player,” said North Stars coach-GM Anthony Palumbo. “We are in need of some offensive punch, no question. We think he has the ability and potential to help our scoring woes. He’s also a 1990 (birth year), so it’s not like we mortgaged the future in giving up two tenders.”

Jean, a Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., product, played 15 games with Marquette this season, netting a pair of goals and assisting on three others, with a plus-1 rating and six penalty minutes. He spent last season with the Midget AAA Soo Indians – as a teammate of current North Stars Marc and Garrett Thompson, Eric O’Hearn and Eric McLintock – leading the club with seven goals and 15 assists in 24 MWEHL contests.

“He’s a big kid, but he’s skilled and talented, too,” Palumbo said. “He will skate on one of our top three lines, we’re not sure where just yet.”

I posted this or something similar in other threads:

I watched the entire scrimmage on Friday and he was the best player on the white team. There were times where he looked like the best player on the ice. The video sucked and you couldn't read the names but I kept asking who was #53. Finally found out it was Jean.

It was one scrimmage and not sure what to make of it, but he looked like he fit in well. He can skate and had decent enough hands.

Can't have a team full of small forwards like the Habs..adds depth size to the wings..

People forget this is the AHL offseason as well. Sather needs to get players signed there as well.

Good for the kid, took an opportunity by being invited to the camp and impressed hr brass to get a contract. Like those stories.

If invited to Traverse City this year, he should be comfortable. He played there with the North Stars.

Not sure why you would think that. This kid wasn't signed to score 30 goals.

Is Jean pronounced like a pair of jeans or how French people say the name?

Cerny pronounced like a pair of pants. This move is not unexpected. Anyone who followed the development camp is aware that this kid was the standout among the invitees.

Seriously? The Rangers organization made the offer to sign JAM but he chose to sign with the
Avalanche. Not difficult to figure out that he thought it would be easier to get to NHL with them. Nothing wrong with it but I fail to see how it is the Rangers fault.
