I thought the free buyouts were supposed to be used before the 2013/2014 when the cap is going down?

I'm so happy right now, and feel like a hypocrite for caring. The way this will work, with training camp and a season right around the corner is a new and interesting situation. Usually, you're waiting the whole spring and summer for the season to start... Sure, now we got to wait a lot longer depending on how you look at it. But seeing how I had given up on a season a long time ago, it feels like I got NHL hockey back out of nowhere and now I'll just have to wait a couple of weeks for it to start.

On variance, lowest-paid season of any multi year deal can be no lower than 50 per cent of highest season

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC
Floor next year $44 million

We're already 11m above the floor this season (55m currently according to capgeek)

So, we got an agreement that was telegraphed by the NHL before the season started, probably won't fix much for small markets, the players lost a boatload of money, and we are likely having another lockout in 8 years. Well done NHL and NHLPA, well done.

On the bright side, most teams still won't have the cap space to poach Perry and Getzlaf, and more importantly I haven't already seen Teemu's last game.

If anything, under the new CBA, Bobby's contract is even more valuable even though it has only two more years left after this one. I doubt he is going anywhere. But if he is it better be for a ransom.

Expect Ducks to open on road somewhere as Honda Center is booked Jan. 17-20. Team had 4-game trip on original sked but teams may change.

ESPN taking cheap shots at the NHL right now. They have "the sports reporters" saying Hockey isn't a major sport, and that things like college basketball and soccer are more popular. ******** much?

EDIT:Unholy beat me to it.

On regular ESPN? I have ESPN on right behind me, and I didn't hear anything (granted I'm not paying attention).

Isn't The Sports Reporters hosted by John Saunders? That guy's canadian! lol

It was ESPN2. No way we're going to see hockey on ESPN on a Sunday during NFL playoffs. Even if its huge news. ESPN is still ******** that the NHL ditched them for NBC.

What are the RFA/UFA stipulations?

This seems at least better than the last deal for a team like the Ducks, that 7year contract limit with an option of 8 for re-signing players isn't as beneficial as the 5/7 we had initially heard, but it's still a hell of a lot better than what was in place.

The cap going down to 64.3 mil will also be helpful for teams like the Ducks, as will the buried players rule.

All in all, I'm just happy to have hockey back.

I think just having contracts capped at 7/8 is a benefit to the financially weaker teams like the Ducks. It makes it somewhat harder to offer ridiculous contracts. But I don't think the 7/8 distinction will keep any player with his current team if a good deal can be had in a more desirable (to the player) location. It just isn't enough of an advantage to the old team.

I saw that number as well but wasn't sure about the context that goes with it. Do the Ducks stand to increase their revenue by $200M each year going forward? For a team that used to operate slightly in the red that would seem to be a big boost towards financial competitiveness.

I remember there being talk about eligibility being opened up for teams like us. I assume we would benefit from it.

I haven't read it in detail but that number means that there are $200M total dollars to be spread around in some fashion each year amongst the teams that qualify.

Yeah. Helping not-so-established teams develop? Helping cash-poor teams invest in facility upgrades? What the hell is a growth fund?

Ah, OK. I should have realized that was more like a pool to split. But if even half the teams split it evenly (wild guess that I'm sure is not accurate) that could still help a lot with financial competitiveness in conjunction with a hopefully "smaller growth" cap going forward.
