I think Cloyd is going to be another Kendrick. I have seen a few of his starts on TV and he doesnt throw that hard (maybe topping out at 90) and doesnt have great secondary pitches.
Right, I understand that. I guess what I meant was I don't understand why he was DFA'd in the first place in favor of Martinez
I guess since the organization picked Martinez in the Rule 5 draft they want to see if he can be a utility guy at this level. Fontenot, you already know what you're getting, so at this point no reason to hang onto him.
Awesome win! This team has looked a lot better as of late.
Let's see if they can finally beat Atlanta. It'd be nice if we could at least breathe down the necks of some of the wild card teams towards the end of the season.
Even after we got rid of two of the worst guys in terms of swinging at pitches that they have no right swinging at, we still have little plate discipline. Howard, Rollins, and Mayberry are still culprits.

Phils just can't beat the Braves. Oh well, at least this wasn't in Atlanta where their half empty stadium would be egged on by the PA system that pipes in the Tomahawk chop.
One of Amaro's most overlooked yet stupefying blunders: Releasing Jason Grilli in the middle of last season, when he was dominating AAA. Not even trading, releasing. The Pirates immediately signed Grilli, who was a revelation for them in the second half of 2011 and is now arguably the top setup man in baseball. Go look at his numbers, they're silly.
I'd love to hear the reasoning behind Amaro's move. If it was Grilli requesting his release because he didn't want to play in the minors anymore, why not just bring him up? It's not like our pen last year wasn't in need to another power, shutdown arm. Sorry, just something that's been bothering me ever since it happened, and especially now given the horror show that has been the Phillies bullpen in 2012. This might seem like a minor and petty gripe to have, but these are the types of small -- and shrewd -- moves that prove pivotal in building good teams.

Not defending him because that does sound like it is a bonehead move by RAJ, but is it really the GM's decision to bring someone up or down? I always just assumed that was the manager's call (i.e. someone is slumping, Charlie sends him down and picks who to call up, not RAJ).

It's a collaboration. Charlie and RAJ talk and Reuben pulls the trigger.

No, all personnel moves are made by the GM (though input from the manager is solicited, I'm sure). The manager really only has absolute authority over what happens DURING invidual games (lineup, player substitutions, pitching changes).

Muahahahahahahahahahaha!! Now that is how you raise your ERA by nearly a full run in one outing. First time the Pirates have lost all season when leading after 7 innings, by the way (were 54-0).
Hold onto your hats ladies and gents, the Phillies won a second straight homestand. The first time they've done that all year. It was by the slimmest of margins in both homestands to count as wins (4-2 and then 5-4), but it could've been worse.
