If Burke extended Kessel today...

What amount would you be happy with? 7 years averaging 6 per season? Too much, too little? With Hall, Skinner, and Tavares locked up long term, does this affect Kessel's worth or does it just improve it?

I think Burke would only go up to five years on a contract. Value wise, I'm not too sure.

$6.5-$7/season, preferably over 6 years but I'd imagine, in the current climate it will be 10 years.

I imagine the Hall contract has set a benchmark for Kessel and his agent. I think they'll at the very least want to top that contract.

5yr at 6.5mill

would be happy with that, not a penny over but i feel he would be worth every single penny at 6.5 on a team discount in his prime

He'll be a UFA after this contract, and with the current salary cap he'll make 7 mill a year easily. Term is harder to pin down and I think theres a chance Kessel will take a little hometown discount for an NTC. My guess would be $6.875 for 5 years.

The thing is that was Hall's second contract, this will be Phil's third and up coming ufa. Can't really compare the two.

Agreed. If this contract is not considered 'reasonable', what is? What will Kessel be signed to?

The upside of a 5-6 year deal is, Kess can still cash in with his next contract. If the financial climate improves he'll make much more than the guys with 13 year deals.

I'd give him a 10 year 75 mill contract, easy.

I never said it wasn't reasonable, it just won't be used as a bar or starting point.

Actually, it will be used exactly that way. By the agents... If the top RFA's are signing for this, Kessel will cost a lot more.

Just to piss off the core of Edmonton and rattle them, I'd give Kessel at least 7 million for a seven year contract but would adjust the NMC to his first 2 years, and last two years but have the middle 3 years as a movable player.

I understand the question says "IF" however as per the CBA rules a player can not be extended until the final year of his contract.

With Kessel having this year + 1 extra still remaining a contract extension is technically not applicable at this point until July 2013.

The only reason that this hypothetical question can't be answered outside of the CBA rules is that the current CBA is ending and the landscape could be changing including things like contract limits and reduced cap totals.. So Kessel's contract will have to be signed under the new terms and potential different scenario than we know today.

No, they will use comparable UFA contracts.

6 years just under 7 million per. puts him until he's 31. After that we'll see.

Hoping he resigns though, I dont have reason to believe he will or wont for at least another year.

great point, Well we may as well just close this thread and wait to see what happens but before you do....

I wonder if GMs would want or be able to start adjusting on NMC's and have the right to start forcing players to only be able to lock up a portion of their contract to a no movement, keep them on their toes for contracts that seem too long?
