Sabres fan here. Just wondering how the Flyers used Ville Leino to make him somewhat successful when he was with your team. I just can't find a place for him in our lineup. He's not a good shooter, turnover prone and doesn't hit. My question is, what type of linemates does he need to be successful? Should he be with bigger more physical players? Playmakers? Snipers?
A skilled centerman who can pass and shoot (Briere), a big physical winger who drives the net and has a wicked shot (Hartnell), and a lot of luck.
Honestly, Leino has a lot of skill but it seems like he doesn't care sometimes. He just wants to be given the puck and be given chances to score instead of going out there and creating things for himself. I think that's why he was successful as he played with two hard working guys (when it comes to offense) and Danny Briere is one of the most clutch playoff performers I've ever seen. Put him with Ott and a skilled player like Cody Hodgson.
He needs space on the wing to dangle and create, give him a trash man in front of the net and somehow who can find space in center ice and he can make plays. He's kind of a one trick pony, and he holds the puck too long.
1. He needs to relax. He is making too much and knows it, year 2 should be better
2. Briere was a huge reason for his big year. HOWEVER, most Flyer fans would agree that Leino was a huge reason for Brieres 30+ goal season
I think Leino is a very good player, but he was last years Matt Carle. Good player on a very good team, but not even close to worth the contract he signed. Tampa fans will be feeling your pain soon.
Put him on the wing with a creative center and he will succeed. On Buffalo, you don't have such a player.
