Stephen Whyno @SWhyno
Can confirm after speaking with Mathieu Perreault, he has new 2-year deal with #Caps.

I've always liked him. I think he's got potential to become a solid 2nd line C in the Mikhail Grabovski mold.

Has he shown any progress Caps fans?

He had 30 points in 64 games... A hat trick against the Bruins when we were without Ovi, Green, and Backstrom.

Inconsistent though. Shows flashes of great offensive play and energy, and then stretches of games where he disappears.

Is inconsistent but the oppurtunity he was given was also inconsistent, Oates might be a better fit for him.

Capitals signs Mathieu Perreault. 1 year contract. AVG will be a little more than 1 million per season.

looks like its a 1 year deal not 2

Perreault himself told Whyno (Washington Post writer) it was 2 years.

Solid signing if it's one or two years around a 1 mil cap hit. He could really do well under Oates.

Good deal for the Caps, even better at two years. Perreault has shown some progress, the points are a given off a nice season, defensively has improved too-- although that may have just been a result of Hunter's systems. Good soldier, can play anywhere in the lineup.

Has the potential to be a very good player, but it seems to be under-appreciated by Caps fans. I feel like he is just as good as Johansson...

He's no Jack Hillen or Joey Crabb, but I'll take it!

Perreault doesn't have the elite wheels Johansson does, and he seems unpolished, but I think some of that is due to his insane level of effort. I like the player and the contract.

Perreault is 3 inches shorter, 25 lbs lighter, almost three years older and slower. That alone puts Johansson well above Perreault. That being said, Perreault is under-appreciated in WSH. I hope they can find a consistent spot for him.

A mod should probably correct the spelling in the thread title. It's Mathieu Perreault, not Matthew Perrault.

Good signing for the caps. Give the kid a full season. I bet he puts in 20 goals.

I think this is the best description of the situation. 2 season ago he was a flash in the pan type player. He would produce well in a handful of games from a call up and drop off. He even admitted to that in some interviews, but he stepped everything up last year. His effort level has become unreal and he is handling his "size issue" a lot better. It looks like he is reaching the comfort level he had in the AHL at the NHL. I'm glad the Caps are rewarding him for that. Like the rest of the team, hopefully a coach that has the players attention with a system that fits the players servers him well.

Yea, he was still inconsistent until Jan.
0 pts in Nov
2 pts in Dec

After that he started producing. If he can be consistent for a full season, the numbers will be good. I still don't think he is a guy you want on your playoff top-6
