Puck Dadd reportiing that the Flyers have lost Andrej Meszaros to torn achillies heel. Maybe Luke Schenn will be top four after all.

A "mysterious injury" to create cap space (re: offer sheet to Subban). Meszaros will have a miraculous recovery near the of the season.

@Eric Francis tweeting that top Flames prospect smacked some guy in a bar in Cochrane,...the victim was left with a broken orbital bone.

Edit: apparently Ferland punched the victim who was helping someone who'd been pushed tothe ground. Sounds like a sucker punch.

Update: Ferland has been charged with assault.

was there not a thread concerning malhotra and garrison having marched w/fin in the pride parade, or are threads like that now frowned upon because of the inherent political discourse they cause?

Doesn't really have to break out in a "big way". He was one of their top players in his rookie season and put up 63 points without playing with Staal at ES (admittedly he did get softer minutes than Staal). Even if he's a 65 point player for life that's still good production for that money. If he becomes an 80+ point player, especially now that they have Jordan Staal to help him, then it's a bargain.

Its crazy how teams are abusing the whole caphit being the average of the contract.

Looking at Ryan Suters contract on capgeek. 60 million over the next 3 years. Wow.

RFA's that put up 65ish points don't historically make almost 6m on their second contract. They're basically paying for 80 points and it only becomes a deal if he manages to break that. He got a better deal than John Taveres, that doesn't seem right.

65 points in your first two seasons when you are 18 and 19 for the majority of the season is extremely impressive IMO. Skinner should be a pretty good bet to eclipse 80 in the seasons to follow.

20 worst Corsi ratings in the NHL. Not a Canuck in the bunch.

Mind you, even with zone adjustments players who get tough assignments will typically get shafted in the Corsi department; rookies/borderline AHL'ers will also suffer too of course.

A bit surprised to see Iginla and Gaborik there though, those are guys that simply are supposed to do more. Gaborik in particular had a 63% O-zone start yet a below average on-ice SV%; his team did shoot 10% when he was on the ice however.

The markets has moved on and Carolina isn't the type of franchise that gets discounts.

And this is why I die a little inside every time I hear someone suggesting we replace Ballard with Hannan.

I don't see the NHL season starting at the same time as always. Probably pull an NBA and have like half a season.

Man, that sounds amazing. Probably so much fun. Too bad Naslund wasn't playing, but I guess he'd be a step behind the rest. I wonder what this was for.

Hannan was drastically over-played by the Flames.

Ballard was playing 15 mins/game, Hannan was playing 20:20/game with next to 0 pp time (granted Ballard had also almost zero PP time, but still more time than Hannan).

Also it's not that Hannan is 'better' than Ballard, it is that Hannan @ $1 mil or so is a good replacement for a $4.2 mil Ballard if the Nucks need cap space.

I would take Hannan over Ballard strictly for PK purposes. Seeing Ballard battle in front of the net with a pretty weak Tanev is pathetic.

I used to like Hannan a lot. Hard nosed team guy with a decent shot...but have you watched him the last couple of years? Slow and confused would be the best description I can think of. I'd definitely keep Ballard in this comparison.

That would be the third lockout in Bettman's tenure as commissioner and second longest lockout in NHL history. Compared to (as far as I can recall) 1 lockout in the 76 years before that in which only 10 days were the players locked out. Who does that fall on? The players? The owners? NHL? Bettman?
