Forsberg will always be my one and only true man-crush (considering a 21 tattoo) and I hold Roy directly responsible for our exit that year. So much was riding on that series...Forsberg's Conn Smythe, repeat SC, not to mention we'd have been 4-1 vs. Detroit in the playoffs to that point and Cups would have been 3-3 not 4-2 in the rivalry era. Gotta stop. Getting pissed. I HATE Detroit!
You do realize that the Avs scored a total of 0 goals in games 6 & 7, right? Roy's mistake was painful and all, but it's not like it happened in OT and doomed the team. It put them behind 1-0 with a whole lot of the game left to go. It wasn't the deathblow of the series or even the game.

Thanks so much for posting this. I've been looking for it for years, even though it's painful to watch. Oh, what could have been...

I really wish ESPN would put this out on DVD/Blu ray. Favorite part is the closed door meeting where you can hear Foote chewing them out.

Thanks for the link btw...

Really, this is the worst moments from your avalanche memories, going into each and every year expecting to win, guys like Kariya coming in under the league avg to play for you, everyone in the world expecting you to win so badly they decide before the year starts to make a documentary

Yeah ill take that over winning 5 (def felt that low) games after january or having a year so bad it gets called the lost season (duchene consolation helps though)

Its much better to have all the hope in the world and to fall short than to not have any at all

but hey maybe thats just me

edit: Great upload though

Kariya plagued with injuries and Selanne could not score goals to save his life, yet, always scores against the Avs TO THIS DAY.

BAH!!!!

zech: thanks for the upload anyways

Yes, I realize. I was watching. Momentum and confidence will forever be debated in sports, whether "momentum" even exists, how much impact either/both have on the outcome, etc. My opinion on that play, which is shared by many, is that game 6 was so tight when that happened that it swung the momentum and the avs couldn't recover. That's the feeling I had that night. Felt like the death blow to me.

I saw the title of this thread and I instantly got mad. Those are my thoughts on the 2003/04 season.

It gave the Wings life they shouldn't have had. They were the hungrier team, but the Avs were the Champs. Definitely one of Roy's worst moments in net.

EDIT: Never mind, I see it's already been mentioned lol
Nothing was more disappointing for me than the way the lockout gutted and ruined this team.

Let's just face it... after our 2nd Cup, bad things just started to happen to the Avs.

Technically, they started DURING the 2nd cup run. Just ask Forsberg's spleen...

Remember the expansion drafts and the HUGE dilemma of having to choose between Denis and Aebischer?

I remember so many people were divided over that. And it put the weight of the world on Aebischer once Roy retired.

Easily 01-02. Yeah, hopes might've been higher before 03-04 with the stacked (on paper injury free) lineup, but anyone who actually watched the games by December knew that there probably wouldn't be anything special coming out of that year.

That's a whole lot different than getting to game 7 of the WCF expecting a huge win and getting an absolute drubbing instead. And then the refs go and make it worse that game by not even counting Sakic's goal.

This proves again and again how important Patrick Roy was. No matter how many joesakics and peterforsbergs this franchise has had, they haven't made it to the Conference Finals since 1985 (without Roy).

edit. Made it slightly more clear.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I obviously meant without Roy. Nordiques made Conference Finals in 1985 and since that, it has taken Roy to be that far.

leaving that talented group in the hands of Tony Granato (a wet behind the ears, sub par coach) and David Aebischer (wet behind the ears, sub par starting goalie) was absolutely ridiculous and a terrible mistake by management, imo.

man, that season hurt so bad. was so frustrating to watch.

You know what's the worst part of that? They never learnt anything from that. Fast forward to 2011 and you see there Joe Sacco and Semyon Varlamov. Sure, you can argue Varlamov was pretty good in 2011-12, but was Aebischer that bad in 2003-04?

I think signing Jose Theodore was an attempt to get that big time goalie after Aebischer and Denis failed. Unfortunately it turned out to bear very disappointing results. Coaching...I have no idea what to say, except...haven't learned much.
