Fayne's buds from the team last year are now elsewhere, Palmieri and Tao

Well since Pari$e left, I'm sure Fayne is thinking "Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching!"

That's probably why he filed for arbitration.

I think he filed because he only had to be offered 110% of last years salary to make sure he stays a Devil asset...

He's going to get a raise, and I don't think it goes to arbitration.

How much, though?

Just give out your personal Ballpark figure....I'm curious.

If I'm Fayne I probably ask for 3 million. 2.5 from the Devils point of view would probably be ideal.

I'm guessing $1.8-$2.2 for a 3-4 years deal. Remember he's still an RFA, and has only been in the league for 2 years.

$3 million+ is what I expect Henrique to probably get next year if he has another great season. We all know forwards of Henrique's caliber will make more than a D man of the same caliber.

Yep, with Fayne at least, the second contract is not dead. He won't make big money, but he will get a healthy raise. I think he will make a bit more than you suggest though. Since he is 25 already, any contract that takes him past age 27 has to start buying UFA years. So I expect closer to $3 M per.

He won't make it to arbitration unless he has a ridiculously inflated view of himself. With Parise gone, we have more available cash, so we don't have to scrimp on the other contracts. Fayne will get a fair contract from Lou without having to go to arbitration.

I think people on here are having trouble distinguishing the value Fayne has to the Devils versus the value other teams might perceive him to have. Say for instance any team giving up a 4th round pick for him? I don't see us getting much more than that for him. Is he more valuable to the Devils then the 4th round pick? I don't think there is any question about that. He's a valuable piece to US that wouldn't fetch much on the trade market. Ideally I think Volchenkov is the one that has to be moved rather than Tallinder. Either way something has to be done for Larsson to be a regular like Lou said he would. He needs to be. But Fayne without question is an extremely important piece to our backend.

There is no question that Lou gauges Fayne much higher than that time-buying offer.

Remember how most of us were scoffing at Clarkie's or Greene's new deal. And look at it now.

Fayne has more value for our team then the other 29 teams. That's the only reason why you don't trade a guy like that, because the return is usually horrible.

I think he'll make closer to $3 M. Lou has no reason to lowball him now, and salaries for capable defencemen are creeping steadily higher every year.

Clarkson and Greene are special cases because they're older. Sorta like Madden and Rafalski were for their 2nd contract (but different circumstances).

I'm sorry but I don't get this. I can think of more than a few teams who would trade an asset for a 25 year old shutdown defenseman entering his 3rd year.

Yeah. I think we could get a solid top-6 forward for him.

As would. I don't want to trade those players so soon because they are (IMO) so valuable.

It'll be a nice problem to have if two rookie defensemen make a strong push in preseason.

2 years $2M per, 3 years $2.25M per, 4 years $2.5M per A little extra for each UFA year. I think we may be going a little overboard with the expectations for a player with 2 years under his belt. Business is still business. It's like there's a bit of "pay everyone or we'll lose them!!" mentality in the wake of you-know-who's departure.

No it's the fact that the cap is 70 million and 2.5 per for a good young D is chump change...

The cap isn't 39 million anymore folks.

I'd like to see that happen. Urbom and Gelinas stepping up would allow us to move one of the other defencemen for help up front.

I still don't understand why some people want to get rid of him.

He's so damn solid back there on the blue line. Sure, he isn't flashy by any means, but he does the little things so well. He's not a liability or anything back there and he has some offensive upside.

I wouldn't object to Fayne getting $3 million a year. If you look at what some of these other deals that defensemen are getting, $3 million for Fayne is a good price.

I have no idea where you get the laziness idea from at all. He never shows that. I can't think of a time I noticed Fayne being lazy.
Despite only two full NHL seasons, on the current roster Fayne is our iron man for games played. Hell yeah he can handle the workload.

Young Top 4 D men available for the low 2's do not grow on trees.

Filling for arbitration just protects your rights. We do this every single year with someone, and always seem to get things resolved just before the hearing. It's the Devils way.
