I'd be more against Jackman-Polak than Russell-Pietrangelo, but if they do play that bad together, Hitchcock will make the adjustments. I'm at the point where I completely trust our coaching staff and front office, so whatever they decide, I'll become confident that it will work.

Or, like you said, if it doesn't, they will adjust. I have all the confidence in the world in Hitch and he has forgotten more about hockey than I will ever know. I'm so ready for the season to start so we can stop speculating on what we think will work, and see it in action.

Also, I was looking the time on ice for the Blues dmen and was wondering who will play second powerplay with the departure of Colaiacovo? He was playong 2 mins of pp/game. Russell was already eating about 1 min 50. Will a mixt of Cole and forwards play the point? Maybe Steen?

I bet we start off with Steen and Russell at the point on the 2nd unit. Cole might get some time, but he'll have to earn it.

Blues - Ducks

Blues trade a 3rd round pick to Anaheim for a negotiation period with pending UFA Getzlaf. If he agrees to a contract extension with St Louis,
2012 First Round Pick
Ty Rattie
D'Agostini
Steen

Getzlaf appears to be the best pending UFA center for 2013. The Blues have $32M payroll in 2013. St Louis offers a package that resembles what Columbus got for Rick Nash to get a big first line two-way center that would work well in Hitchcock's system. Blues give up rebuilding pieces of two 2013 picks, a top prospect, and 2 NHL players.

Feel like Anaheim says no.

Let's see how the Blues offense produces. A top LD would seem to be more important than trading assets for Getzlaf. He would make a nice addition but he would probably demand a big salary.

i feel like its a 3rd round pick wasted since the Blues can't give Getz what he wants or what he'd get anywhere else
he'd be great as Tarasenkos center though...

but lets see how the season goes before, for us and the Ducks

Carolina supposedly may make a trade soon after the CBA is lifted. Pitkanen has been thrown around as a name (although I'm not sure how Carolina could afford to move him really; their defense would be pretty exposed without him.)

What would you guys throw at Carolina for Pitkanen? He'd be a pretty good fit here, right?

yeah I've read and thought about that too, just didn't follow the Canes much so can't say how good he has been the last couple of seasons?!?

Form the Ducks POV, it is a nice package, but it doesn't service their needs. Centers is what they want, and if they are losing their star C, then they will be wanting someone more proven than Steen at C coming back.

From the Blues perspective... I hate to keep banging the drum, but while we only have $32.4m committed to salary next season we still need to sign/replace Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Berglund, McDonald, Russell, Cole, D'Agostini, Stewart, Nichol and Langenbrunner. Our salary bill for this year was due to be $46.6m. So the rise is going to be significant and basically kills the chances of this as a trade.

I might be in the minority here, but I like our current set up. Rolling 3 high-end 2nd lines means we have natural depth and don't have to worry about 1 star guy getting injured.

I'm pretty happy going into the season with what we have at this point. Pitkänen would be a decent fit, but I agree with you that he is pretty important to the 'Canes defense. They might be willing to move him, but I am certain I'd not like the price.

I do wonder what the Panthers would want for Kulikov's RFA rights. Part of me hopes that he'll stay in the KHL for the rest of this season and Stewart has a big year... Stewart+ for Kulikov

I think we should give Leopold some serious consideration on LD. What do you think Buffalo would want (hes a UFA after this season, reasonable 3m contract), and what could we send their way?

I like Leopold as well. A 3rd round pick.Trading deadline isn't until April 3rd.

I'd love if we are able to get Weiss at the deadline if Berglund doesn't take a step forward. Hopefully our finances are in order to not only make a deadline deal, but make a deal that can help us for more than just 1 stretch.

Not spending money over the summer could be a blessing in disguise, as we should have more money to spend at the deadline.

Whille true, dont forget that after this season, Petro, Shattenkirk, Berglund, and Stewart are all due raises as well.

True, I'm also basing that on the Blues either making a small profit or at least breaking even this season. Another interesting situation will be what will we do with McDonald, especially if he doesn't play at least 40 games this season. If McDonald gets another injury, it might be best to spend his money on someone else, unless he takes a pretty decent discount.

Anyone think we will talk to Redden when he is bought out? Haven't seen him play, but I guess there's a chance he could be something decent.

Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk are due raises, while Berglund will only see a small increase if he doesn't break out...Stewart has to come back from last year to deserve a raise.

True, if Stewart doesnt bounce back(which I think he will) I doubt he will even be here though.

Redden's a year older then White, and hasn't played in the NHL for awhile now, I doubt it.

Yeah I'd rather just stay away from Redden and Gomez.

Not sure if I should have started a "around the league" thread or not to discuss, but I'll just throw this here. Wonder what Getzlaf is looking at if he hits UFA. Zajac just got 5.75 for 8 years. 8 years 8 per at least? Not sure how many of the bidding teams are going to have room to fit a cap of 8+ per, but I'm sure teams will figure it out...

Man I do not like deals that are longer than 5-6 unless it's for an elite player. I've said this before but the only player on the blues I'd sign longer than 7 years is Petro. Gotta wonder now that there is a max contract, if every player that is a top line/pairing player is going to be seeking an 8 year deal if they're closing in on free agency.

I like that the blues have Armstrong making the decisions, but man do these players have leverage once they start sniffing UFA, due to the limited supply of quality UFA's.

I'm not even blaming the devils here, since they had to do what it took to sign their #1 center. **** is just crazy to me.

I'd give Berglund an 8 year contract if the cap hit could be kept around 3.5 or so...But he'll likely want around 4 for quite a few years.

I wouldn't be surprised if Berglund got a 1 year deal in the summer.

I'd love to see an 8 year/$3.5m-$3.8m per deal for him though.
